A quality point and shoot under £300?

Just reading some of the old threads but can't find an answers.
Is there a descent point and shoot anyone owns? One that can produce good sharp pictures, a large aperture?
Is this possible for under £300?
Reading reviews on, I'll look in store but will by from here, the Sony RX100 looks ok. I need a few others to look into though.

I had the same needs earlier in the year and got a XF1 from Currys. I am still amazed by the pics it can take.

Thanks for that. Just looking at Currys website. They are doing the Fuji XF1 for 130. I'd have enough left to buy the Mrs a pair of shoes. Everyone's a winner :D
 
You could also look at the Fuji X20, which will also be within your budget.
 
The Fuji cameras are so much cheaper than the Sony or Canon ones on this thread. Is it still the same old you get what you pay for or is the Fuji on par with them?

I'm not trying to save money here. Just looking for the best one.

The Fujis are actually very good, bigger sensor than most compacts. Their video modes aren't as good as Sony or Canon though.

I'm not that fussed with video. I have other things that do that job :)
 
Currys had the Canon G16 on offer at £279 recently.
 
I also looked at the S120 and RX100. The Fuji sensor is bigger than the Canon but not the Sony RX100 but I felt for the price you could not beat it. Just look through the thread and see what fellow members have captured! That thread is real world examples and sold it for me. It goes with me everywhere as it is so small. Yes it isn't a DSLR beater but grabs the moments.

300 easily buys you a second hand sigma dp, 2.8 prime lens, crushing quality wise (d800 ish)
 
But Noah had quicker AF on his 2 Giraffes. :D He could also take more shots with them before the battery died.

Joking apart, the IQ from them is absolutely amazeballs.

Not a lot touches the XF1 for price, it simply can't be beat imo.
 
The xf1 at that price is a no brainer. I'm sure she would apreciate the looks too. However With your budget you can get a 1" sensor camera like a rx100 or a nx mini.

Thanks for the help everyone. I only got to look at the Sony rx100 yesterday as none of the other were in stock. That Sony is one small camera. I'll be popping back to the shopping center over the next few days to see if I can get my hands on the others.
 
Don't forget the Panasonic LX series, very nice, capable little cameras.

I do have 18 or so batteries for them :-O :-) 4 quid each

af isn't too bad unless its dark, you can set range limit too :-O
 
Things have changed slightly. I now have £600 to spend. The only camera I've been able to play with so far is the Sony RX m3 and the Canon G7X.

I really want to feel and see the IQ on the Fuji XF1 as lots of people have said it's a great camera. The only thing that's raising my eyebrow over this camera though is a youtube video review where someone said the camera rattles. Nothing should rattle.

Cameras don't normally rattle, but at least there's a very quick test you can apply to check whether it's real or not. :)
 
I had in mind walking into a camera shop and asking to try one, but John Lewis might do just as well. :)
 
The don't sell that model which is a shame. Currys don't have it in my local store either.
 
Anyone know of the cameras mentioned or others that have Smartphone/Tablet remote? (where you can see it on the Smartphone/Tablet). It would be great to set up the camera in my garden and capture the birds and the squirrels close up.
 
The Sony A7 will work with a smartphone.
 
Just looked up the Olympus E-PL7. Same again. Not quite a compact camera :)

Could you also consider the panasonic LX100?
TBH the Fuji XF1 and the Sony RX100III are about as close as Mcdonalds and the Fat Duck. If I had £600 to spend on a P&S THe XF1 wouldn't get a look in as its inferior in every way.
