A Picture a day (My 365) . . . Made it to the End!

Well I've been through weeks and weeks of research and top of my list is the 5D mk2 (given I have the money now). Just a shame it seems the worst time to buy (even if you can find one).

10th Apr: Happy days!!!

Battery just finished charging, so taken my first few shots, wow ISO 6400 loveliness.

Thanks Chilli, yeah can't wait to get some serious low light shots, although the amount of options is a little daunting.

ok not my picture of the day, but the first 2 shots on my 5D mk2 (unprocessed)

ISO3200, f5.6, 1/80sec

Looking forward to using this baby in anger :)

Gulp, the 2nd shot RAW file size is nearly 30mb, gonna need a bigger hard disk

11th Apr: First proper 5Dmk2 shot. Went to some great National Trust properties today, but weather was poor and did not look like getting any better (well according the forecast), so left the camera at home. Typical turned out into an ok day and I could have bagged some nice shots. So rushed out after tea to shoot this cottage on the village green in the fading light.
Running into some other issues in stepping up to the 5Dmk2, this RAW file was 31.3MB size, converting to JPG it was still over 17MB (so reduced the image size to get the file size down), my SmugMug account only allows 12MB max file size, unless I upgrade to a pro account. But that's a minor issue, I'm blown away by the level of detail in the images when viewed at 100%, I've only added a slight 'S' curve adjustment, no sharpening or anything else at all!

Thanks JD, Going to take a while to get to grips with the transition to FF sensor and everything that comes with it.

Hi Shrubmonkey, I've just noticed you left a lovely comment in my new-look '365. Thanks for taking a peek at it, so it's only right that I should take a proper look in your's one and am loving what's in here.
And congrats on your purchase, enjoy your brand new 5D (said with a slight hint of envy  :D ).

Thanks for your comments Ian, Yeah it's a bit of a jump from a 350D to a 5Dmk2, so lots to learn. Forgot to mention love the meteorological shots you have, the Dog Sun was very interesting.

12th Apr: Glastonbury Abbey. Found it tough going today, balancing parenting (forgot the picnic, oops), photo taking (people moving in frame when about to shoot) and getting used to new camera. 3 shot AEB HDR processed image (resulting 16-bit TIFF file was 120MB!!!), image scaled down so I can upload to my SmugMug account.

Thanks Dave, well still making some dumb mistakes, like using spot metering mode too much, went a bit crazy as the 350D didn't have it :bonk:

Try again . . .

13th Apr: FIRE!!! Had a fun time at Fort Nelson - The World at War.

Thanks to the heads up from Dave on this one, the event was great plus the fort was very impressive too. The other thing about Portsdown Hill is the vista, what a stunning view of Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, shame about the pylons in the view.

Added a sepia and film grain filter to try and give it that dated look

I have found a photo album of my great grandfather's at my parents house so I have actual comparison material (dated to around 1920) - very authentic looking! The only difference is the size most of the prints are about 5cm wide and only slighty higher.

Thanks Dave, shame you missed the big guns, they made the ground shake, very impresive.

Added some more shots from the day here

Playing catch up now...
I LOVE that macro HDR floral image, extremely impressive, I feel inspired now, lol.
Im so jealous, I want your new camera, lol. Im getting a new one, was supposed to get one on my birthday but we didnt have enough money, so still saving. Looking forward to seeing more with your new kit, that cottage shot is great.

Thanks zarozinia, HDR rose came out better than I expected, still wish I had selected a different colour rose. The cottage shot was my first proper 5Dmk2 shot and the images sharpness was stunning. I'm lucky to have been given some money to afford ;)

Well processed on that last shot

Thanks Chilli, very pleased with how the additonal sepia and film grain filter looked, much better than straight B&W conversion, especially considering the subject matter.

14th Apr: Family day, only had my compact camera today, but my sister had her D300 (Hi Pip!).

If I'd not spent such a frighteningly large sum of money on gear recently I'd buy that head, it's fantastic.

Not a GPS, it's wireless receiver for remote release.
