A Picture a day (My 365) . . . Made it to the End!

11th June: 'WE ARE NO LONGER A WORKING GARAGE' - Part II
Just had to go back and take a more detailed shot of this derelict garage today. I took a shot of this garage back on May 11th and applied a T&S effect here:
http://shrubmonkey.smugmug.com/gallery/7008587_Pf87B#534002919_vtaKW-A-LB

This time I wanted to get in close and capture the detail of the old pumps. Again, like last time I was not the only person photographing the garage, I counted at least 3 others taking pictures in the 20 minutes I was here.

Applied a cross-process effect, together with dodge & burn to bring out some of the finer details of the pumps.

Thanks Cyclone :)

Only reason I'm taking and processing shots at this time is I'm working out my redundancy period, so not too busy ;)

I'm signed off and won't be going back, but I seem to be extremely busy at home

Thanks JD. Haha no, it's right on the road in the high street, plus I think the merc of the guy who was taking photos when I went down before (who was interested in buying the property) was parked in the garage.

3rd June: The worlds most famous fly fishing river.
Dry fly fishing originated here on the River Test in Hampshire, England. Even today it is still regarded as one of the best fly fishing rivers by fisherman all over the world. Only down the road for me, I made two trips to the River today and got chatting to a couple of old boys fishing, was thoroughly relaxing. so much so I may go back tomorrow.

This was the only shot that I managed to capture the complete line during a cast, was harder than it looks.

I used to do a bit when I was a lad, as I grew up on a Farm that had a tributary of the River Thames that ran through it. Never tried fly fishing, but seeing as I live very near the most famous fly fishing river in the world, I may have to give it a go one day.

I really like that, I can imagine it was difficult to get the whole line in frame :)

I'm not surprised you struggled!
The line is very thin and in constant motion, must have picked up some sunlight in this shot.

Thanks Kay, yeah was really hard, this is at 400mm and image has not been cropped, so it's about as good as you could get it.

Thanks Cyclone, yep sun was behind us, so that really help bring out the line ;)

Really like the PP on that last shot Julian - really suits the subject matter, and i can imagine the fustration trying to get the whole line in shot :)

Thanks Chris, actually wanted this shot in colour, but there was some distracting colours in the background foliage, so went with Sepia, it does kind of work like this ;)

4th June: Grevy's Zebra
Was another gorgeous sunny day today, so made a quick visit to Marwell Zoo with the intention of having a nice colourful animal shot. This Grevy's Zebra was all alone under a tree away from the other Grevy's Zebra (largest of the three zebra species) and Scimitar-horned Oryx, found it difficult to get in close as there were 2 fences and the branches in the way. The photoshop processing applied (curves, noise, blur, dodge & burn, channel mixer mono conversion) is supposed to reflect how sad the Zebra looked all on it's own and partly as this species is listed as endangered :(

Thanks nic, actually it was really colourful, but looks sooooo much better in mono.

Thanks JD, yeah it does, really strange effect considering it's under a tree in a field :) For this composition, colour did it no justice

Two very different images for the last couple of days, great capture with the fishing rod - very nice composure.

June 5th: Hungry young giraffe
Went back to Marwell Zoo for another quick visit today :)

Few more from shots of my 2nd quick visit added to yesterdays here

They are, they're one of my favourite animals at the zoo, though I haven't seen any for years!

Thanks nic :)

Having a season pass and being 20 or so minutes away is great, really enjoyed the last 2 days, even though the vists have been quick.

6th June: The BIGGEST!!! (Yeah more ship shots)
Operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, the Freedom class cruise ship - The Independence of the Seas is currently the largest cruise liner in the World (together with her 2 sister ships) and during the summer season she is based here in Southampton. The Independence launched in 2008 is 345 meters long and weighs a massive 154,407 gross tons. The 15-deck ship can accommodate 4,370 passengers served by 1,360 crew.

On the left of the Independence is the smaller P&O cruise ship Oceana (261 meters and 77,499 gross tons).

Was a great day for Ship spotting, Not only did we have the Independence of the Sea (the biggest 'cruise liner') and the Oceana, but the biggest 'ocean liner', Cunards flagship the Queen Mary 2 (345 meters long and 148,528 gross tons) was berthed behind me when taking this shot at the new Ocean Terminal. The Independence is the biggest passenger ship by gross weight and the Queen Mary 2 is the biggest by length width and waterline breadth and displacement.

All 3 ships left within 20 minutes of each other.

Thanks JD, yep had to be done, if it's too big, then you need a bigger monitor ;)

7th June: Alien Egg
No, just a cantaloupe melon, but this effect kind of reminds me of the the facehugger eggs from the Alien movies. Applied 2 cross-process curves adjustments in Photoshop and dodge tool to bring out some shadow detail, finally adjustments to the cross-process layers opacity to take a bit of the harshness off the effect.

wow SM, these last few shots are incredible. The sharpness takes your breath away, especially on the giraffe shot. The ship pics are like something from a magazine, absolutely breathtaking!
