Those of you (us) that have their own domain names please be on the lookout for a new type of scam - coming from China this time.

The content of the email goes something like this...

To whom it may concern 2009-4-2

We are a domain name registration service company in Asia,

Last week we received a formal application submited by Mr. John Zhou who wanted to use the keyword "<your domain name>" to register the Internet Brand and with suffix such as .cn /.com.cn /.net.cn/.hk/ .asia/ domain names.

After our initial examination, we found that these domain names to be applied for registration are same as your domain name and trademark. We aren’t sure whether you have any relation with him. Because these domain names would produce possible dispute, now we have hold down his registration, but if we do not get your company’s an reply in the next 5 working days, we will approve his application

In order to handle this issue better, Please contact us by Fax ,Telephone or Email as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

Joy

I checked out their web address and emailed them back saying we'd fight any claim to use our name (it's one of the bands I play drums for) - I then get a follow up email...

Dear Ian
Thanks for your prompt reply. As far as we know, Mr.John zhou want to apply for the following names:

muleskinnerbluesband.cn
muleskinnerbluesband.com.cn
muleskinnerbluesband.asia
muleskinnerbluesband.net.cn
muleskinnerbluesband.org.cn
And Internet Brand "muleskinnerbluesband ".
You would know domain name takes open registration, this is international domain name registration principle. So Mr.John zhou has right to register it.
If you think his registration will confuse your clients and harm your profits, we can send an application document to you and help you protect these domains within our approving period. This is a better way to prevent domain name dispute. If you think his application will not affect your company, you can give up, we will finish his registration. Hope get your decision as soon as possible so that we can handle the next step

Best regards

Your Sincerely Joy xu

The alarm bells start ringing a little louder this time and sure enough, on checking this out further (using google ) - it would appear that if I ask for the application document it is little more than a registration scam but at massively inflated prices.

You have been warned!

That's OK, my name isn't John Zhou so he won't want my domain name. ;)

Seriously though, there was a case a few years ago where someone I know registered hundreds of domain names with a particular word in it. The local council tried to sue him saying they owned this word, because it was published on all their stationery and newsletters etc. and had been for years.
They lost and had to pay all his court/legal costs too.

If you want to avoid this kind of thing, register the domain name yourself with the cheapest registrant you can find.
I pay £3/year for mine through 123-reg.

yeh - I use 123-reg too for all my UK domains and go-daddy for the .com ones and do all the hosting myself - I have a great "re-seller" package for just $19.99 a month - seemples

This is not new - been variations of this going around for years - incl one from an American company. Only register the domains you need - forget the rest. Best just to ignore these emails.

THere are a number of domain scams circulating.

I received a letter from a company with a rather official name with domain registrar authority in it about 3 months before one of my domains was due to expire.
It was esentially giving over inflated renewal prices for my domain for a lenghty period - naturally I just thoughs scamming *******s and binned it.

Good idea to highlight it, I hope no-one gets caught.

123 can suck donkey **** for all i care. Bunch of thieves IMHO

Good heads up from the OP, some of us will be familiar with it, but some wont be
