I have completed my first week in photography and I'm dead keen to try new things ...flashing!

I have been trying to read up on using the flash. It would seem that it is best not to use the built-in flash but buy a seperate one. Also not to sit it on top of the camera but to have it slightly to the left or right of the lens. The problem is, I use a Nikon D60 and the only place to put the flash is on top. Can anyone recommend a particular flash and is there an attachment I can buy to allow the flash to sit off centre.

Hope that makes sense and you can help.

Actually, a flash on top of the camera is OK. It's usually far enough above the lens axis to avoid red eye in most situations, and any harsh shadows are at least thrown downwards behind the subject.

The problem with this arrangement is that when you rotate the camera to portrait orientation, the flash is now off to one side of the camera and throws a horrible harsh shadow off to one side of the subject.

The answer is a flash bracket which allows you to reposition the flash to be above the camera regardless of camera orientation. There are loads of them out there from the reasonably piced to the scarily expensive! Just do a Google on 'flash brackets' and similar keywords - you should find loads of choices.
