Am I the only one in the whole of the world who believes that in a bird hide you should whisper or remain silent, unless in an emergency.

At minsmere today, in a couple of the hides, there was just constant idle chat at one point, and I'm thinking.... SHUT UP!

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH :bang:

i thought chat in a bird hide was acceptable, but only if your talking about birds...

"cor look at the tits on that'
or
"look at that blonde bird over there"
or
"look at the pins on that red breasted thing"

all acceptable phrases in the hide

we were at a dressage competition today and it was mostly quiet apart from the odd muppet slamming doors oh and setting off the hand dryers in the toilets was a good one too.

Next time I'll come dry my hands on your sleeve :P

The one & only time I have been in the Otter hide on Loch Sunart. I heard this couple coming from the carpark. Several hundred mtrs away. She got louder as she came closer. Then the dog running loose put in an appearance.
When they finally got to the hide she proclaimed in a loud voice. "not much point in walking all the way here. nothing to see"then they left. Poor husband looked very hen pecked.
Me, I counted to 10, several times!

Nothing against quiet chatting in a hide, but the guy that turned up at Mere Sands a few weeks ago in a DAYGLO WATERPROOF was WAAAYYYY over the top!
Every bird for 2 miles did a bunk!

drives you bonkers doesn't it?

we were in the kingfisher hide at Rye Meads the other week when an old couple turned up with their grandson (great grandson???). HE was bounding around the place, shouting, head, shoulders and most of his torso haing out of the hide windows. He then decided to check out the wheels chair bay downstairs - herd of elephants doesn't even beging to describe the noise there. My comment to the guy next to me was along the lines of, "well, at least we'll have plenty of warning of his return". Needless to say, it didn't take long for the boy to return, upon which the grandmother told him that he should really be quiet in there. I guess that lasted all of 10 seconds before he was hanging out the window shouting again.

As you quite rightly say aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhhh

Now I'm not a violent person, but you do just want to go a give some people a slap.....

I don't have a problem with people talking in hides. I have never found talking to bother the wildlife much. What does disturb the animals is land-based vibration or movement: Heavy footfalls approaching or inside the hide, banging of windows, scraping of tripod feet etc. Movement seems to scare stuff more than colours as well. I have spent many a day "experimenting" as well as observing nature AND nature watchers.
I have sat in a hide on my own and talked loudly to otters, kingfishers, water deer and plenty of other stuff and found out that they generally are not bothered. Regarding colour, I have even worn my hi-viz vest in woodland and found that the birds became used to it as quickly as if I was in camo gear, PROVIDING I WAS STILL.
