A little advice

Apologies, as i'm sure this gets covered a hundred times a day, but being a complete noob I thought i'd ask for a little advice before I dive in and spend a fair amount of money on a piece of junk.

I'm after a tripod. I don't have a lot of kit, just a 400D, kit lens and a nifty fifty, although i'll be looking to expand on that in the future. Having read around the forum a little, I understand that scrimping on a tripod will probably cost me more in the long term so although i'm not prepared to break the bank, i've got a budget of around £100. I really, really, don't want to go over budget. What factors should I be considering? I'm 6'2 and want something relatively lightweight.

Any advice appreciated. Cheers :)

Depends how much of a wuss you are when it comes to carrying

I'd put forward the Manfrotto range, either the 190xprob, or the (heavier) 055xprob

The 055 is taller, which might suit you, since you're fairly tall, but it is heavier..

The 190 weighs 1.81kg, and the 055 weighs 2.4kg (excluding the heads)

You can pick up a 190xprob for around £100 including a head - Clicky

There are also lots of other options on the Morris site, and they come highly recommended for service and price. :)

I have the 055 Pro B and it is a cracker.

Did purchase a third party carry strap for it though to make life easier to transport

Just bought the 190XPROB and 804RC2 head and impressed with it so far. It's really easy to use but I'm 5'6" and and have to bend a little to look through viewfinder when it's fully extended. Price £131 including delivery from Fotosense. Might be a little out of your budget and not tall enough

Get the heavier one - you know it makes sense for the extra rigidity, and if rigidity isn't an issue - what do you want a tripod for?

If the 2lbs difference Mattyh alludes to is a problem, make sure you have a good session on the toilet before setting out - easily lose those 2lbs that way

It's not 2lbs, it's 2kg :p

Plus... don't you use one of those mini table top tripods for your landscapes? :exit:

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

You said "the 190 weighs 1.81kg, and the 055 weighs 2.4kg", which is not even 1kg difference m8, hence my suggestion of 2lbs

As for the last sentence... you're :cuckoo:

:D

Oops. I didn't actually mean to write a number, just meant that we're all metric now, and have been for a few years, so there

I don't know of these lbs you speak of, I'm far too young :D

Well you must have had a bloody hard life then to look like you do !!!!!!

I almost wanted to write back mentioning Florines & Groats to get into the right time period for you

You must need a BIG facelift m8 - but just watch out to avoid your belly-button resting on your forehead

Cheers for all the responses. Just having a nose around the morris site and it seems that the 055 is a little bit more expensive than the 190 and perhaps out of my price range a bit. The weight really doesn't bother me, particularly if it's a difference of less than a KG, but i'm leaning towards the offer on the 190xprob with a head for £103, purely on the basis of price.

Whilst i'm here, I may as well mention that i'm also looking for a bag, £50 tops. Any suggestions...? Bare in mind I have very little kit and may not be expanding for a while yet. I like the look of the Lowepro Mini Trekker but don't have the kit to fill it with. Would a Slingshot 200 be a better choice? Thanks all!

I went from a slingshot to the Minitrekker for two reasons... firstly, it doesn't have a way of attaching a tripod, meaning you had to carry the 'pod separately, which became a bit of a bore on a long day out. secondly was for space, although that was more of an added bonus. :)

I use the Mini Trekker - the AW waterproof one - if there's space through a lack of gear, then it'll easily hold your sarnies, flask, water, jacket, map, etc.

Had mine 4 years now and still looks good as new, very hardwearing and very comfortable even though it usually has around 20lbs (ok Mattyh, 8kg) of weight in it

Cheaper/smaller bags are a false economy as you'll only be replacing it within 12 months anyway

My 2p !!!

might be worth looking at redsnapper tripods, few people bought them and seem happy enough, £90 inc head. there link is on the homepage.

http://www.aldine.co.uk/redsnapper/

there is a 10% discount for tp members as well

Thats the one I've got.. great minds and all that huh :suspect:

It's worth spending the extra for a decent bag IMO :)

Right, well I think i'm sold on the mini trekker but now i'm torn between the redsnapper and the manfrotto 190

Is there much between them?

Just to confuse your choice even further, don't rule our Velbon tripods.

Their Ultra Maxi range are very light, flexible and easy to use and mostly under £100.
