I suppose I was always a Nikon Man. When I started with the Police Scenes of crime squad, we used Nikon F2 Photomics, then, later, F3s. The boss then decided that we would change to Mamiya, so I purchased my F3, and a few lenses. I loved that camera. I was, however, tempted into the light by a beautiful Canon T90, which I still think is one of the finest I have ever used. Later, I dumped the T90, and FD/breechlocks, and purchased a spanky new D10 and a few EF's, later a D20, the a couple of 1Ds.

When the Leica M8 was introduced, I decided that that was the way I was going to go, as I had several really good examples of Leica glass, so in an effort to fund an M8 and a new 50mm Summicron, I sold my EOS 1D mkIIn's and all my 'L' glass, on this forum, last summer. Firmware corruption on the M8, and the fact that all the old Leica glass needed coding to work in all modes on the M8, I packed the whole shebang carefully in a cardboard box, and sent it all off to Solms in Germany. That was the last I ever saw of it:'(

Now, I'm retired, and I was never going to be able to afford to replace all the Leica gear, or, for that matter the 1D's and L glass. I did however, still have the F3, and some Nikon primes. A friend offered me a new old stock Fuji S3 pro, which would take all my Nikon F mount glass, so making enquiries, and being told that they would meter correctly in manual on the S3, I went ahead and bought it.

The S3 pro arrived, together with a spanky Tamron 35 - 300mm VR, and I was happy. It was a good combination, but s l o w :| Even worse, I found that I had been misinformed by someone who should know better (a world renowned Nikon retailer), who mistakenly told me that the MF lenses would meter on the S3. They wouldn't:gag:

So, I took some of my savings out of the biscuit box under the mattress, and bought a beautiful, and very capable Nikon D2X, and a new AF 400mm F4 ED IF lens to go with it.

I listned to the naysayers, and the prophets of doom, who tried to talk me out of it, and went and bought it anyway.

God is kind!! They were both excellent examples. What a combination. I honestly thought that I would never have a better camera than my 1DmkIIn. I was wrong. I never thought I would ever have a better 300mm tele prime than my Canon 300mm f4L. I was wrong. The combination of the D2X with the AF 300mm ED IF is a match made in heaven. I would review the kit here, but there is a better place, but I'd like to show you a couple of pics.

The pic was taken handheld, the cat was about 15 yards away. Exif will show 300mm, AE priority, f7.1 @ 1/300 sec ASA 100. All camera settings were neutral, AWB, NO SHARPENING!!! There has been no post processing either.

Here's the original:

Here is a 250% crop:

I am now a confirmed 'Darksider'. I don't think that any Canon lens that I used on my 1DIIn (and I had a few), would produce a crop as sharp and detailed as this. I am simply amazed that a Jpeg straight from the camera could be as good as this. Yes, I know that it is slightly OE, but I didn't want to do any PP before I posted it. I can't wait to get it mounted on a good tripod!!

Erm, what's a 250% crop?

Shouldn't the pixels be 2.5x larger than normal?

Cropped to 2.5 normal size = 250% of normal size.

Great detail though I admit, I am unsure what you mean by a 250% crop.

Am I right then in assuming the Leica gear got nicked in the post? :shake:

Sorry, still confused.... bear with me here.

Has the cropped image been re-sized at all?

Sorry, don't want to sound like I'm p***ing on your picnic but the exif shows sharpness was set to Hard

No, only resized by Photobucket. The Pic was cropped and saved.

Yes, the Exif does indeed suggest hard sharpening - I was certain when the camera arrived this AM, I set all features to factory settings:shrug:

Nevertheless, good IQ and sharpness for such a large crop.

Yup, Leica gear was nicked before it left UK. Addressed to Leica AG, the thief must have known what he/she was doing.:'(

Thanks for the 'darkside cookies':)

Ok, so it's a 100% crop - that makes sense and indeed it does look mighty nice

Which ever way you look at it its pretty damned impressive

I would even go as far as to say "It looks the cats whiskers" :)

are you sure it wasn't Canon kit ???

That's what I was thinking :p :bonk:

Looks great :) Glad you're pleased!

Out of interest, what happened to all your Leica kit?

Nicked in the post. All £5000 worth, before it left the UK.

PO said they'd make enquiries, but I didn't believe them, so I asked them to report the matter to the Police. They said no, and that they're internal investigations team would handle it.

I tried to report it to the police, and they said it was a matter for Royal Mail!!

I've rung RM dozens of times, and have yet to have any infor from them:bonk:

You entrusted £5k to Royal Mail???? You fool! :cuckoo:

I would have sent it by courier (UPS) and insured it for the full value.

UPS wouldn't carry or insure it, nor would Interlink, or any of the other carriers. They dislike high value portable packages. They won't insure jewellery for the same reasons. If you care to check statistics, ALL international carriers have a similar loss rate.

I'm a trusting old fool.

In fact, I've been sending high value packages all over Europe for years using Royal mail, and I've yet to loose a package. This is the first one.

I actually asked my insurance company if the goods would be covered (it was all insured separately), and they said it would. When I tried to make a claim, nobody could remember me speaking to them. I was paying £500 anually for an all risks policy.

I live in hope that it will all turn up.

Good to see you back Doug. Any reason why the D2X and not the D300?

No reason really other than I got a very, very good deal on a mint and complete D2X package. I borrowed a D2H several years ago, and was impressed with that, enough to make me consider the D2X, which is of course, much improved.

The camera handles beautifully, and does everything that I want it to do, ie take on all my old manual glass!!

I'm also a bit of a luddite, and mistrust new technology, until it's been around a while.

It's always good to get a good deal! I guess I can't talk, I'm running 1D Mk II and 1Ds Mk II when it is clear to me that the 40D will probably produce better images - certainly than the 1D!

Sounds like the cheap S3 is costing you a lot of money!

Paul

Not really Paul, I could if I wished turn the S3 back into cash, but it has possibilities that I'd like to explore.

Don't worry about having an older camera. Like me, if you're on a budget, you'll probably not be able to afford the newest gear. I'm not a great believer in reviews, and statistics, because the reviewers are nearly all paid to do what they do, either directly, or indirectly. What we own, were state of the art a couple of years ago, and are certainly no worse now than they were then. If they were brilliant then, they still are.

I certainly don't consider my camera inferior to any new Nikon models on the market - different, maybe, different algorhythms perhaps, but the camera will take pictures as well as anything on the market.

I often go to DP Reviews, and pull up some of the older models, such as the Canon 1D, and the Nikon D1, and look at the sample images. Considering some of them came from a sensor boasting less than 3mp, they are astonishingly good, even at full size.

I like the D2X, in fact, I like it no less that the 1DMkIIn, and the D20. The pics will be just as good, and the good glass will always produce superb images whether used on a manual 35mm SLR or a state of the art DSLR. It's the light falling through the lens onto the sensor, and what we do with it that's important, not the price, or model of camera:lol:

Strange, UPS ship 10's of 1000's of £££ worth of kit for me all the time. Granted I have a commerical contract with them, but I'm surprised they would not take on a consumer job at the right cost??!

Still, have you tried raising a complaint with the FSO against your inurance co? I had a similar issue with my insurer (they like red telephones) and the FSO lit a rocket up their behind's which soon got them paying out and apologising profusely...
