A 'horse' portrait... how did I let myself get talked into that? **Pics added**

Thank you everyone. Yes to be honest, just me being there was enough to put her on edge. I think after a bit of getting used to me I may have tried a bare Speedlight, but I'm not so sure she would let me near her again after the first flash

I like the light heartedness of the first image... we'll see what the owner thinks in a day or two.

Did anyone notice my cloning out of the lead-rein in two of them? ;)

If you are going to do it , do it cute I say  Well not a true horse but cute never the less :D

your last image really is the only one which gels
first eye is closed and second is unbalanced and background fussy
third needs eye highlight...ps..;)
were you scared

if this looks to warm...thats how i like it

I think the third's great and they should be very happy with it... I actually think the shadow works in it!

If you want to get a portrait of family and horse, you could try moving some armchairs or such like into the field and having the family sit there for a while - horses are nosey creatures and will usually come over eventually to see what is going on. When I used to work for a horse charity, our photographer did a great portrait of chairman sitting in an office chair in the middle of a field reading annual report - two retired racehorses reading the report over his shoulder!

Thank you again for your comments people, much appreciated.

Mrcrow - she's asleep in the first one, with her tongue hanging out :).
I agree as a show image of her prize animal it sucks, but as a fun image I think the owner will see the funny side.
I agree that #2 is not the best lighting or pose, granted  but I quite like the grazing horse and fence etc in the BG.
#3 I like for its feeling of drama and probably the best composition of the three. It may be my monitor, but I think your edit is way too saturated for me, but thank you for taking the time to post it, others may pref it  Yes I was scared for a while, she really wasn't happy for a while. She had a lead rein on, which was pulled from the owner's hand when she bolted. As horse owners and those that know about horses will understand, it's a serious risk to the horse galloping with the rope trailing.

I'd say for your first go they're pretty good, well done. I'd agree with your comment about the horse in the background in #2, especially if it's another one of her horses :)
