So is there any cameras you could suggest which i could start off with?

Thanks for taking the time.

It depends on what you are looking for in a camera Kieran.

I spent a lot of money on point and shoot then bridge cameras. Money i would have been better off saving and spending on a DSLR. You can get a Canon EOS 350d with lens for £300 - £350. If i were starting again, thats what i would do.

There are plenty of darksiders on here that can suggest a Nikon alternative.

If you want plenty of artistic freedom, no shutter lag and full control...... a DSLR is your goal.

The Nikon D50 can be had at roughly the same price as the 350D with lens. Great peice of kit. Used one as a stop gap coming from film to digital. I have to admit though, Canon to have the edge when it comes to lenses but user interface and ease of use goes to Nikon. Your best bet is to save up and get an entry level DSLR. Dont just buy it, go to a shop and get a feel of how they work first etc,...

King.

You could find out if you like SLR photography quite cheaply by buying a camera and lens off ebay. Some of the makes that don't exist in digital form now (and hence have valuable lenses) can be bought quite cheaply.

£40 would get you a SLR with lens (or even lenses). A few quid for film and processing and you are set. If you like SLR but want it easier and no film then save up for a DSLR and sell the film camera on ebay again.

If you hate the whole big camera and lenses thing then it didn't cost much more than a couple of films to find out. just a thought :)

I'd echo that but with one additional suggestion. I did pretty much what Robert suggests, but had already decided I wanted a Canon long term. Bought an old EOS 500N and a couple of lenses which I felt would do what I wanted from eBay - total spend was under £150 including postage BUT the lenses I bought I also knew I could take forward with me to an upgraded camera if I get on with the SLR thing OK. I was then lucky enough to be able to pick up a 2nd hand DSLR a while later from a pro 'tog friend of mine at a "sensible" price!

Think il try for the Nikon d50. Il look it up on the web get some info about it but that seems to be closer to my price range.
Cheers for your help guys

Ok so The nikon is good for ease of use and is a decent piece of kit. But the canon is harder to use but has a better range of lenses.
As most of you suggest the canon il look more into that.
ps: I dont think the link is working.

I'm not sure the Canon is harder to use per se - you just need to handle both and see what is comfortable to you.

Actually, as Arkady will tell you the Army tend to use Nikons....... draw your own conclusion ;)

If you get into photography you'll eventually realise, whatever you buy, you should have bought an SLR in the first place - it's simply the most flexible photographic tool there is. ;)

And we all know how unreliable Army kit is:D

rofl - far more charitable then i was inclined to be mr Darter :)

I was in a similar situation last year but knew I wanted a digital SLR. I bought second hand from ebay after some research and have never looked back.

Whichever you choose between Nikon or Canon will not be the wrong one, there are plenty of people selling good quality second hand 350d's (Canon) and D70 or D70s (Nikon) as they will have upgraded.

If you want to buy a D50, pop into a Jessops to handle it to see if you like it. Given their profit warning recently, they should welcome you with open arms. However, when it comes to buying it, just about everywhere else is cheaper unless they price match.

Good luck.

great i understand abit more now!
You been good cheers people im gonna have a look around ebay and some websites.

just remember there are more than Canon and nikon.
DSLR is great if you can afford it and its more than just buying a cam and lens.
If you truely have a budget to stick to then a DSLR isnt the way to go for now and you may be better off with something like the fuji 9500. A really excellent way to get a kick start into photograpghy.

I bassically want good quality photos and if im wrong correct me but isnt DSLR supposed to have a quick shutter release so you dont get a delay for how long the picture is taken?
How else does it differ to like other cameras?
sorry if im being difficult and im liking the sound of ebay (never used it before but got mates who will help me out :D)

There is no perceptible shutter lag on a dslr (one of my main gripes with normal digital). You will have much more artistic license with such things as yoru aperture and shutter speed. I went Dslr in July and I'm hooked would never look back. Not to mention all the great kit you can spend your hard earned money on later. They also tend to hold value rather well (especially lenses) if at some point god forbid you decide to get out. People still use their 10D and 300D cameras althoug they are 2 generations ago now. I will say now that the 400D is out you can pick up some good bargains on second hand 350D's. If you do tons of low light shooting you might want to stick with Canon as the lower end Nikon's tend to be crap at high ISO's. But if that isn't your thing it won't be much of a worry. Really you can't pick off of the comuter you need to go to a shop and try them out as they each have their own "feel" and one will just feel right.

You're comparing a racing car with a sedan chair Kieran.

With a DSLR / SLR there is no shutter lag - when you release the shutter the picture is taken.

You have control over the ISO which affects the sensitivity of the sensor to light (if you go the canon route this means you can shoot inside a church, without a flash, and still get good pictures.

You can control the shutter speed from 30secs to 1/8000th sec or with BULB leave it open for a long as you chose - you can get really artisistic light trails from cars on a motorway doing this.

You can control the aperture and have manage depth of field; chosing to have a 1mm plane in focus or an entire scene in focus.

With a non-slr / DSLR you dont get this control. You may have some, but not all of it.

Worth every penny :)

yeh thats what i meant.
Ok thanks alot i agree with getting a feel for it because if i make a mistake i aint gonna do to well. Il see when i can head out to some shops tonight.
Thanks again.
