Hi,

I've been having a rethink of my gear for a little while as my requirements/interests have changed....

I've currently got a 7D and I'm also lucky enough to have the following bits of glass:

24-105mm F4 IS L
100-400mm IS L
100mm F2.8mm IS L

Now when I had got the 7D I was mostly shooting birds, planes and my rather barmy kids - now I've found myself do alot of more landscape photography and really getting it and finding myself more and more pleased with the results. However - I've noticed the 7D doesn't seem suited to landscapes - it's noise handling and crop seem to let it down and I've found that I'm not using the 100mm nowhere near as much as I thought I would..

So I'm toying with selling the 100mm and using that to trade up to a 5D Mk ii (I think the Mk iii is some time away) but I'm want people's opinions with here is do I need any extra (or different) lenses for decent landscape work....

Any comments/advice appreciated :)

Cheers,

Matt

I cant comment on the 5DMk11 but on the 5D the 24/105 is superb, much more versatile than on a crop
Like you I have the 100/400 but use it on a 40D,I am wondering if I can crop the image on a 5D Mk11+100/400 to be better than the 40D+100/400 so I could sell both the 5D and the 40D and buy a 5DMk11.
If you dont use the macro I would go for it,I just sold mine for that reason

No, the 5DII's pixel density is still lower than the 40D's.

It can act as an 8mp crop sensor, compared to the 40's 10 megapixels.

When many people think about landscape they think wide angle, full frame, 17-40, 16-35 or maybe even 12-24, I'd urge anyone to think beyond these.

Hmm... tough one that. The 100L image quality is higher than the 24-105 and this is really noticeable on the 5D2 (IMHO). The ideal would be to get 5D2 and a 17-40 L, but I'm guessing that's a bit expensive... If doing landscapes, the 100-400 might be your least used lens (unless you still do lots of bird shots).

I will still be doing birds/planes - so the 100-400 will be staying :) (and I'm hoping I can keep the 7D too.....)....

So just sell the macro and get a 5d mark one!! It produces excellent full frame level pictures!!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but thanks for that it saved me a lot of cash ( I keep the 5D +40D)

I just bought a 5dMk1 to go with my 40D and its awsome,I would go with Edinburgh, sell the macro and get one-its worth every penny.

Have to say the one lens I wouldn't get rid of is the 100mm L ;)

Whilst I tend to agree it's an awesome lens - but it's come out less that a couple of times over the 18 months or so I've had it - and I've found I've not got the patience for Macro - the little beasties dont' stay still for long enough for me! ;)

I'm just slowly coming to the conclusion that whilst it's a genre of Photography I realise it's something I'm not I'm not good at and it's time to focus on what I'm good at (excuse the pun!)...

Fair enough.... I'm beginning to think primes simply because of that lens...

Oh absolutely and I agree with you - in the slightly longer term my aim will be to probably replace the IS with the cheaper non-IS version, once and FF body is acquired (whatever model that is)...

Thanks everyone - appreciate the feedback thus far......

Just wondering when we'll see the 5D mk iii - that may be worth holding on for mind you the Mk ii looks lush enough as it is :)
