I understand the difference between the two focussing modes, and why it's better to chose A-fc for moving subjects, but what would the dis-advantages be in leaving in that mode for portraits, landscapes etc. I'm just thinking of having less to do and remember, or have I missed something obvious.
 
i wouldnt see any big dis advantage for landscapes but for portraits it may keep hunting unless camera and subject are both very still

OK thanks, I knew there must be a reason, I just couldn't think of one.
 
Without digging out my manual, does my Nikon D50 have a back focussing button?, although as I shortly hope to upgrade to a D90 I assume they do

AE-L/AF-L button can normally be configured to do the focussing. If not on the D50, definitely on the D90.
 
the d50 is in the menu. pencil image then #14, and then it's the bottom option.

this thread has reminded me to charge my battery for tomorrow, thank you.
