Hi,

I keep hearing about chroma screens and was just wondering what there used for?

Also I'm learning how to makeover faces in photoshop, but was wondering how long it should roughly take! I've used a few different techniques for smoothing skin but never get the same effect as magazines!

I'm using 2 techniques, the first involves creating 3 layers, adding a high pass filter and a hard light to the top layer, then adding a surface blur to the middle layer.

The second involves adding a layer mask then dust and scratches, gaussian blur, add noise.

Is there another way or just need to practise with the ones im using??

Thanks

smoothing skin, you mean airbrushes?

magazines - show me an example so id know what you mean :)

Here's the method I use.....

The 1st step is to get rid of all the spots, moles and blemishes etc using the healing brush or clone tool

The next step is to select the entire face with the lasso or the magnetic lasso.

Set the feather parameter to 1 pixel .

If a lot of skin other than the face is showing select that also.

Then chose Layer > New > Layer via Copy (ctrl + J).

This will make a new Layer from the selection.

Now Select Filter > Blur > Guassian Blur and set the radius to 30 pixels.

The next step is to select the Eraser tool and set the opacity to 50% and the mode to Airbrush.

Make the image small enough and the brush large enough so that you can cover the blurred area in one pass.

Make one pass over the entire image.

Then reduce the size of the brush to about the same size as the subjects eye.

Zoom in on the image to near 100%.

Now make multiple passes over the eyes lips teeth eyebrows and jewellery.

Finally reduce the opacity of this layer until you can see some texture in the skin.

I use a similar method to hobbytog except I tend to adjust the radius dependent on the image. Some need more than others. I then use a layer mask on the layer and use this to unveil the important areas, teeth eyes etc.

Thanks very much people im going to try both effects.

I came across an example which look quite good, and the skin is just like what im trying to do.

Does the quality of the final result also depend on how large the image was at the beginning, as in how far you can zoom in, its got to be high-res that sort of thing?

Just revisited the orriginal post and you asked about Chromascreens.

Simply put these are screens of a very specific colour, usually Blue or Green. Known as Chroma Blue and Chroma Green. The idea is that these are used as backgrounds and using these specific colours the background can be specifically " dropped out" and a new one added.

If you try it, make sure the foreground subject doesn't have any of the background colour in it and the background needs to be smooth and evenly illuminated, usually some distance from the subject so that shadows aren't a problem

Hope this helped

That was a help, thanks.

What method would be used in photoshop to remove the chroma background and replace say with black or white???

Using the eyedropper select the colour background. The using the color range option ( it's under "Select") and choosing sampled colours it will pick out that specific colour. It's always best to check that it's not locked onto non background colours else this can give funny effects.

This will then select only that area. You'll see it come up in red as in quick mask. Turning off quick mask you'll see the area selected by "the marching ants". You can now fill this with a colour of your choice.
The alternative is to make this area transparent and overlay the initial image onto a new background.

Have any of you tried mamas powder action for PS.... might save you some time...
