A fairly extreme ISO test - D3 - ISO 25,600!

Hi Guys,

Just thought I would attempt the impossible, a shot in almost complete darkness using the HIGH ISO of the D3. By the way, this is merely a technical excercise. C&C not required! :)

Not sure what to make of the results. All shots handheld, 50mm, f2.8, 1/50s.

:thinking: I'm surprised that the 3200 shot looks to have much less noise than the 1600. Do you think the 1600 ISO shot is a little under exposed therefore?

Edit: Actually looking at it again it looks like the 6400 and 1600 shots are overexposed, and therefore showing the additional noise?

I wouldn't go any higher than ISO3200 on that sensor unless Elvis was walking down the street and I needed to get the shot.

ISO6400 is getting border line.

The real strength of the sensor is ISO1000 - 2000 which looks like ISO400 on many other cameras.

Agree though, it gets silly.

I find the high ISO a bit over-hyped. Before I got one I saw loads of small 800x533 and it looks good at that size. But you need to see the files at 100% to see whats going on..and there is some heavy NR going on (after ISO2000) so you lose detail and accuity quickly. Plus dynamic range drops as well.

ISO1600 really is good, that impressed me - ISO6400, not so much tbh.

I have a few iso 6400 portraits kicking about which I think are very impressive, I will try and find them. You won't be printing them at A1, however, more modest print sizes, quality looks very good.

I realise useless without pics, will do a hunt.

Have you printed any files from a D3/700 at those high ISOs? I have and well I'd easily go to 10000 if I was converting to B&W. Too many people look at 100% crops of cameras and cry in horror at the 'noise' but forget what even ISO640 film looked like when printed. I feel that too may people have now got use to seeing a photo on a computer, and not enough people printing these days :(

I appreciate it has visible noise, however, the room was very dark and once reduced in size, the noise is much less apparent. This should look fine printed up to A4 I guess?

I've done an A4 ISO6400 and its pushing it. Its OK.

We all have our levels of tolerance.. on a D200 its about ISO1250, S5 Pro about ISO2000, so the D700 is doing pretty well. Its about 1 1/2 stops better than what I've had before, but I find some of the 3 / 4 stop claims a bit OTT.

I very rarely look at 100% crops, as it is not a representation of the finished article. I can understand if you are going for MASSIVE prints, its important, however the best way is to use the photoshop view print size.

Fantastic stuff mate, the 100% crops are very demonstrative and I am very thankful for the time you have put into these.

At ISO 25600 on the D3 is the pretty much the same at ISO 1600 on my 1Dmki and my 30D! :gag:

interesting test. i wish my 1D mk3 went a bit higher than 6400, and the 1Ds mk2 went higher than 3200..... it's not enough of a want to jump over to the dark side though!
 
I go to 6400 where I need to, but not really beyond that. I've just had a Graphi album come through with a double page, full-bleed, spread (35x25cm) shot at 6400 and it's printed very nicely. 3200 is a real sweet spot though, and 1600 just stupidly clean.

I'd imagine that for the press boys 12800 is just a lifesaver sometimes.
