No
I recently sent a picture of one of my red squirrels to a professional pattern maker.
The idea being to get a scrollsaw pattern made which I can then saw for a gift for somebody special.
The pattern is now done & ready to be sent to me. The only thing is the pattern maker wants to give me a reduction in the price if I give her permission to sell it as her own to anybody that wants it.

The way I am looking at it is this.
It is quite a compliment to be asked but then again it would no longer be a pattern unique to me.
Just do not know what to decided.
Over to you folks.:help:

Could she not sell it on a commision basis......that way you both would benefit

Tis not about the money really.
I just cannot make up my mind if I am being too 'precious' about the pattern.
I had intended only doing one maybe two sawings from it.
If it goes worldwide then there could be lots of them going about which might then water down the special gift idea. Hope you get my drift!

How about keeping that particular pattern for yourself but providing the pattern maker with a similar shot for sale on a commision basis? That way, you'll keep your unique pattern (I can see the attraction in that) while still possibly making a bob or two out of the similar pattern.

It might not be about the money...but...

You don't want all and sundry selling it...so ask them to do it as a limited edition, for a higher price, giving you a cut :D They could market it as a pattern inspired by the work of #cough# 'famous wildlife photographer' #YOURNAMEHERE#

If it were me (if only) I'd go down the commission route
that way, the more she sells, the more you get

If you want it to be unique to you, then it's easy

It all depends on what you really want - fame or money
Time for a decision

(or a poll!!!)

(not helping am I ?)

I completely agree, I think that way you give a similar picture but get to keep your origional design :)

you say it's not about the money but you may as well make some from it if you can, if you say no all she'll do is download a royalty free picture and copy that.

I doubt it's going to end up in Marks and Spencer's so the likelihood of whoever you give it to seeing another is pretty remote

Go with your gut feeling Charlie, and I think that is to keep it as an original ;)

She has never mentioned commosion, all she is saying is she will reduce the cost to me by almost 2/3rds. We are not talking a lot of money even if I keep it to myself & pay the full price. My guess is that it would be a popular pattern though which would generate some money for the pattern maker.
Having mulled it over for an hour or two I cannot help thinking that although I may never see another one cut from my pattern I would still know it was out there.
I think this would dilute the special gift a bit. I will probably only cut it once myself as it will be a difficult job that will take me many hours.
On the other side though, it would be good to see how someone else cuts it!
Ach I just dinae ken. Gut feeling is to say no though.
I really should learn how to do the patterns myself ( the long term aim) then I could use my own pics anytime I wanted.

If she'd commissioned a photographer she'd be paying a lot more and would be making the pattern at her own cost, so she's not being at all generous.

Decided to keep it as just mine. All I have to do now is saw the thing out. Be back in a few months!

good for you Charlie
now we want pictures of the results! :rules:

Cheers. I kinda knew I would keep it for myself. It will be the first time I have sawn something from one of my own pics. I am now working on making my own patterns from my own pics. Talk about having nightmares.:gag:

It will be some time before you see the finished result though. Months away I think.

You could still do a different picture and sell it to her if you want to make some money.

I could..........................

Then again I could learn how to make the patterns myself from my own shots & sell em myself. Then the squirrels would be earning their keep.:D

Gut feeling is to say no though.

I was just about to say that if your gut feeling is "no", then stick with that.
I see that you already have though

Now that you've seen how somebody else has translated one of your shots to a pattern, it should make it easier to replicate that process for other shots . . . and then it's just a case of learning how to actually make the pattern (I'm picturing the pattern as some sort of perspex template type thingy?????)

 Who knows? There might soon be a whole army of Charlie's squirrels out there

Do you have a link so I can see the kind of pattern you're talking about, i'm curious now :D

An army of Red squirrels :lol:
I reckon it will take me a month to saw one out!
The pattern is made of paper which then gets glued to the wood so I can see where I am supposed to be sawing.
All I have to do now is to learn a bit about Photoshop

I bet any number of us could do that kind of thing for you charlie and perhaps write you a tutorial on the best way to do it too.

Like Sarah, I was imagining a perspex pattern, and was awaiting your come back as I thought my dad [now retired] may have been able to help you out as it was th esort of thing he did whilst working.

Cheers & thanks for the thought. Truth is though if it was something I could make with my hands it would be a lot easier for me that faffing about witha computer. I am trying though & am getting nearer!!
