I was torn between here and the wanted section for this post.

I haven't been a member here long, so most of you probably won't know that one of my main "spare time" activities is organising volunteering projects. I have wanted to run a project in Africa for some time now.

Last year I took a team of 10 students to the Nevada Wilderness to work on conservation projects. This year, alongside the Nevada project, I am running a project to Kumasi in Ghana.

The project is "humanitarian" in nature. Working with local schools to help them in whatever way they want; maintenance, teaching, sports coaching, etc.

This is not one of the projects where volunteers chill out at the beach all day with a couple of afternoons playing with orphans, my volunteers will be working their butt off all day.

The reason I'm posting is that each volunteer needs to raise £1200 to take part, meaning we need in the region of £17,000 to run the project.

TP is a diverse community with members in all sorts of professions, so what I'm asking for is not money (although if you wish to give us money it'd be gratefully received) but whether you have anything that may be either:
a) useful to the project directly
or
b) able to be auctioned in aid of the project.

Examples of useful things would be:
  • Old Cameras,
  • Old Laptops,
  • Clothing,
  • Pens,
  • Notebooks,
  • School Textbooks,
  • Art Materials,
  • Sport Equipment,
  • Connections in the Aviation Industry,
  • Connections in Travel Agencies,
  • Companies that would be interested in supporting us,
  • Outdoor clothing,
  • Mosquito Spray,
  • Anything you can think of

If you can donate anything for us to resell on ebay this would be amazing too!

I hope this post doesn't break any rules, this project is something I've invested a lot of time in and I really want to make it as successful as possible.

Andy

Hi wegotitugetit,

Completely understand the points you are making.

The project is a joint venture between Loughborough Students Union - http://www.lufbra.net/action/ (who I work for as International Volunteering Opportunities Co-ordinator) and a not-for-profit called Thrive Africa (www.thriveafrica.co.uk)

You can verify the project by contacting either Hannah Beasley (Chair of LSU Action - the volunteering section) or Mark Cambridge (Director of Thrive Africa). Their contact details are on the respective webpages.

We have a (facebook group) and are also part of Orange's "People Projects"

You can contact me through TP, at ssam7@lboro.ac.uk at drew@ drewmorgan.co.uk by telephone (pm me for number) or by post:

Hope this puts your mind at rest, the items mentioned are things that we would like to receive, however ANYTHING is appreciated. Shoes and other clothing (in any size) will be just as gratefully received as scratched and beaten up 300Ds or a family friend who happens to work at KLM.
