Hey all
I got some great lencarta gear for Christmas as Im going to get into studio photography. Thanks alot Garry Edwards by the way whos made it very easy to order from Lencarta.
Just a few simple questions that Im not sure of as Im a complete and utter beginner although I am enjoying it and getting used to it nicely.
I have 2x200 smart flash's, 1 umbrella and 1 folding octa box and 1 standard reflector.
When would I use the continuous light on the umbrella and softbox ?
Should I be using this to get better results or just the flash on its own ?
Also the standard reflector, what is the main purpose of it ? Ive got it on the flash head with the umbrella just bacause thats what Ive seen in other peoples studios but I'd rather understand why than just following pictures.
Hopefully these are not ridiculous questions
Thanks all
Joe

The continuous light (modelling lamp) shows where the shadows will fall and gives an indication of their density, although light pollution from any other light that happens to be in the room will make the shadows look less dense than they actually are. It's the flash that provides the light for the exposure, the modelling lamp is far too weak to make any difference.
The standard reflector directs the flash into the umbrella, to fill it. The standard reflector can also be used on its own or with a honeycomb.

Yes, it won't make any difference whether you leave them on or not.
In theory, it could make a slight difference if the light was extremely close to the subject AND was on very low power, but don't worry about it.

Thanks a lot Garry.
Anyone have any suggestions on what my next bit of kit should be ? I have some Christmas money to spend and want to spend it on studio stuff.
What I have at the moment is
The 2 flash heads, umbrella, Octabox, radio trigger and the light meter.
I dont have the background yet or a flashgun and nothing to light the background when I get it.
So if anyone would like to spend my money then Im open to suggestions :)

To be honest one of the best shortcuts is some good training, you will most likely get more out of a £100 training day such as Garry or Jonathan have run for Lencarta, showing you how they use the different bits available.

Also why not look at the postings on the Lencarta blog where Garry and others demonstrate what the different bits do and when to use them.

One thing that I would personally use is a grid (or set of grids) for the reflector.

Thanks for reply Mike.
Thats definitely something Im going to do in the near future. To be honest I'd much rather learn from watching and actually doing rather than reading and following words, not that Im ignorant its just Ive always been better at learning from actually doing it or watching video tutorials.Short attention span I suppose or Im just a bit :cuckoo:
Although I have been reading the lencarta blogs and am finding them useful.Ive also just got the Karl Taylor beauty and fashion lighting secrets which is pretty good.
