Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to have a look.

I've been taking pictures for quite a few years but I'm now looking at upgrading my kit slightly. I went from a 400d to a 7d last year but my main lens is still the 17-85mm that came in the kit with my 400d. I'm looking to upgrade that lens and was debating between the 24-105mm L-series and the 24-70 L-series (if the extra money is worth it)

I currently have a 100mm Macro, a 70-300 sigma and a 50mm 1.8 to round out my set so one to fit into these and a general all purpose lens is what I'm looking for. any advice gratefully received.

Secondly I'm looking at doing a bit more Macro shooting so was looking into a ring flash...essentially i know little about what I should be looking for in this area so any thoughts would be good!

thanks again.

Ben

24-* L will be a good upgrade just not as wide, but anything like 12-24mm can solve that issue nicely. I personally prefer -70 lens but some may disagree.

The dedicated ring flash is probably best, but if you only take a few shots, then maybe look into speedlite ring adapters.

Have you considered the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens or the Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens ?

These are both good walkabouts with great quality for a crop sensor...

I think 24 is very narrow for a crop sensor (effective 38.4)

Hi martin, I hadn't thought of those to be honest, you've just made my decision tougher. Thanks! :)

Sorry Ben :)

I have the 24-105 and the 15-85 and the 15-85 lives on my 7D, the 24-105 is great on my 5D but just not wide enough for a walkabout.... (IMO)

It is a walkabout lens that's I'm after so fair point. I keep forgetting crop factor.

I have a 24/70 on a 5D and it works very well, my wife has a 28/135 (so a similar focal length at the wide end) and tbh on a crop its not wide enough. So an ef-s mighty be better in the lengths advised above.
Ring flash for macro? Couple of people on here advised me against one unless you go for the top of the range jobby which is a lot of money unless you're really serious about macro work. I'm tempted to use 2 off 420/430's or a 550/580 and a 420/430 as a second gun instead as they can be used for other things.

I'm using the 15-85 on my 7D and, although it'd be nice if it was a bit faster, I think the overall package is pretty hard to beat for a 1.6 crop walkabout lens.

Thanks all I'll look into the 15-85 properly then.

Appreciated
