~First thing I notice is that he sounds like the guy from the "s*** town" podcast.

was the tree cut down because of the fame brought by the photographs or for other practical reasons ?

The chainsaw guy was not found so the question still is opened! :(

The same question comes to mind about any beautiful, natural place. I live in such a place and I am acutely aware of the compromise between keeping the place as it is and letting other people know of it so that they can exert their influence to save similar places. If the come to see it, they will degrade it. That is certain. But they may also help to save it.
If we help people to understand nature, then they may help to save some of it, but the more people who go to wild places, the less wild those places will be.

I don't know what to say really... sadly this is the world we live in. Things don't have to be beautiful or even expensive to attract the wrong sort of attention, they just need to be noticed and being noticed is enough for some to want to destroy it. I can't even bring myself to say that the sort of people who do this kind of thing are scum and the world would be a better place without them as there's a part of me that sees them as very sad and damaged individuals.

Oh man :( is all I can say.

Who knows? Childhood / life experience, low self esteem, personality disorders...
Just angry, confused young man I suspect. Lashing out at the world that doesn't understand him. I guess it's better than shooting 27 school kids, but maybe he would have done that if somebody had given him a military weapon.

Did you mean "not as bad as" Steve?

Yes, read better than as not as bad as. In this case better is purely relative. Like genocide is better than nuclear extinction. Everything is relative.

I think it's English. Maybe I could say at least it's better than. Like, at least Donald Trump is better than Adolf Hitler.

at least Donald Trump is better than Adolf Hitler.

The later has proven it's bad… but should the first be
given the same power… not so sure. I get your point.

Maybe I should qualify that. At least Donald Trump is better than Adolf Hitler, so far. Bigly betterer?

This is great, I watched it the other day when. I watch a lot of John's videos, but this one was particularly good.

Did you know that there is a word in English that is Trumpery. It means. "Trumpery derives from the Middle English trompery and ultimately from the Middle French tromper, meaning "to deceive." ... Trumpery first appeared in English in the mid-15th century with the meanings "deceit or fraud" (a sense that is now obsolete) and "worthless nonsense."

Yes, from "tromperie" another relic of the 700 years of Norman
culture. Still in use today in French!

Maybe the video was “photoshopped” and the tree is still there ... I’ll take comfort from that anyway.

No it's definitely gone. The vandals didn't cut the whole tree down but it appears the damage caused the authorities act before it fell on someone.

What a weird, destructive species we are. If aliens ever turn up they will soon notice the state of the oceans, the disappearing rain forests, the melting ice caps and the pollution and filth literally everywhere and decide the best thing to do for the health of all other living things on the planet is to do what we're very fond of doing of and cull the 'invasive species' doing all the damage.

No, they’ll feel right at home because the reason they will have come is because they will have ruined their own world. To a small extent that is true of colonial expansion here.

Trump is also a colloquialism/euphemism for breaking wind.
