Hi guys,
I've got a chance to photograph a tattooist doing what he does best over the next few days.

Has anyone ever done this sort of thing before?

Any tips, equipment, angles, general or lighting advice?

Thanks in advance

I'v taken lots of shots of a tattooist at work. And it depends on the light in the studio as to what you'll need. Sometimes I use off camera flash, but this one I took with my 50mm 1.8 with no flash. Just a very high ISO hence the noise..

Good luck..

Edit: This guy was having some cover up work.

If you intend on using the images, make sure the person being tattooed signs a model release - i'm sure there was a thread on here where one of the agencies required a release because of a 'individually recognisable' tattoo.

I'm personally planning to make a little timelapse of a tattoo being made.?it is a bit time consuming but in this case tattooed person will be me, so nothing much to worry about, only changing angles I need to.....

Hiya I photographed the derby tattoo convention last year

Close ups of equipment and skin works well. Many artist will get in close for fine detail this will give you the opportunity for face and work in the image

I have photographed a few conventions, try and vary the shots, some wider views, but most people seem to prefer the closer, more intimate detail shots ..... ( mainly because thats the view not normally seen ... unless your the artist, or its you thats having the ink done ... )

Link to a set on my flickr ....... http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidlaws2009/sets/72157627939637750/

A few more sets on there if your interested, enjoy the opportunity.

Dave ....

Nice set David. I enjoyed looking through them. I don't mind a bit of inkage myself.

No tips for you as such but i am very jealous ;) I'd love to do this

Well it's done, I really enjoyed the day & everyone was really friendly.

I had the "I've not got any good shots what I'm I going to do" once I'd left but on processing I found some nice ones.

Not finished PP yet but will post up soon for
c & c

Thanks for the help & advice peeps.
