Well been a bit bust of late with my photography. Not only with college work but taking pictures for various other causes as well.

First off is a picture I got published in a BARC magazine. Now, at first I was really made up I got publshed and my name was by the side of them:

Then I read the story that went with it and came across this paragraph:

I am over the moon with it :) Really made my month did this.

Then I got a offer from a local paper to take some pictures ar a local fair/procession thing. I wasnt going to get paid but still snapped up the chance to do this as it will look good on my CV etc. When I got the paper the following week I found I had 9 pictures in it from the fair.

All these are mine apart from the top left one.

Then, after this he asked me stop off at a cricket game and take a few snaps of that. So I did and ended up getting one of them in the paper with the fiar stuff in (knutsford Guardian) and the Northwich guardian. So that was 11 published shots in one week which I am stil chuffed with.

Also, I have been asked to tkae pictures of many of my mums friends (for money) and do a wedding or two.

Oh and one last thing. I am stopping by my local paper tomorrow to sort my thundersprint pictures (northwich motorboke event) for this weeks paper.

Oh and a final thing. I got asked by the Manchester Evening News if I would take a group shot for them on Saturday (again, non payment but there photographer failed to turn up) so that should appear in this Fridays MEN. Also, if you live in the North West, watch North West Tonight tomorrow and you may see my ugly mug!!

Thank you very much for reading, sorry for all the trumpet blowing.

Thanks
Matt

It might well be worth hinting (loudly) at payments from them? you have now started
to "prove" yourself, their tog never turned up, but would have been
paid for the job, you have got them out of a hole so to speak............

Congrats Matt

Will keep my eyes open tomorrow night

THank you very much.

He said that I am meant to be getting paid for my Knutsford fair shots due to the fact that I missed out on Oulton to take them. So fingers crossed.

Congrats Matt

Will keep my eyes open tomorrow night

Thank you very much!!

You will soon shut them again when you see me

Nice one mate

If I were you I would start charging.
Or at least laying out some ground rules.

It sounds like they're taking advantage of your skills!

The editor won't work for free, why should you!

Well done matey!

Watch out for the ones of that parade thingy - those photo refs next to the pics aren't a credit, those are so people can order copies of them.

If they aren't going to pay you for them, they shouldnt be selling them. They are only allowed to sell copies of stuff their own staff togs create, not stuff you submit for the use of news reporting only. Its your copyright mate!

Its good you are getting out and doing stuff, just don't let them screw you over too much!

Also, remain with your feet planted square on the ground... if the subjects they want you to shoot don't interest you AND they aren't paying you, don't do it! Its just costing you money to trek around for no real benefit other than your name on photos... keep it real my friend!

Well done Matt! Now you're established, you can ask for some reddies (think of all the new kit you could get!!)

As a updat for you, my local paper took my bank details off me :D:D

You may be able to get a picture published, but I bet you can't put a fruit pastle in your mouth without chewing it ;)

Well done though :)

I cant, actaully!!

Thank you very much

I have been doing a shed load of research into it so hopefully it will go OK. It is for my sister so with her being family it takes the pressure off a bit.

Matt

Keep marching and don't hesitate. I started work on a newspaper at 17 and worked for it for 10 years before freelancing for the nationals.

The paper will be happy for you to work for free but if you prove reliable and good they will start to pay you. When I first left the local newspaper in 1986 to freelance for the nationals I also kept my foot in the door with the local one and offered my freelance services. They only offered me £10 per job but in the first month I shot 160 for them :):) and that average continued.

In my first year as a staff photographer - and remember I was only 17 I was covering an assignment and a chap asked me if I covered weddings. He introduced me to National Weddings in Epping.

They gave me full training, it was very extensive in that I followed the chap who introduced me for a whole wedding! The following weekend they sent me out on my own :gag::gag: At the time I had a three wheeler reliant :D:D, why only fools and horses did not use my experience as a script only he upstairs knows :lol:I parked my smooth-machine between a couple of Porsche and a Merc. Now remember National Weddings were a very plush affair and charged top money!!

Reason for telling you the story is to let you know I survived, never had a complaint about the quality of my work and am still working pro today thirty years later.

But a word of warning - do not let it all go to your head and keep calm. Picture editors are only human and often have never even been a photographer. They will give you work if you are a pleasant and reliable chap but will not if you start lording it about all over the place.

Do you fancy working for the national newspapers?

Hi Matt,

May I ask how you went about getting your pictures in print?

Were you asked to take the pictures by the magazines and newspapers or do you just send in what you have taken and give them permission to use them for free if they wish?

Congratulations by the way.
