Hi all.
Could somebody with a 5D possibly post a shot taken at 24mm?

Considering trading my 40D and wide angle lens in for a 5D, and just want to see exactly how wide 24mm is on a full frame!

 Cheers

Would it not be the same as 38.4mm on your 40D?

Nope other way round. Assuming the 40D is a 1.6?

It would be the equivalent of 15mm.

i.e. 15 x 1.6=24

Ha ha, too early for me, should be 15mm on the full frame!

Caught you out there then!!!

I think the 40D is a 1.6.

15mm would be probably wide enough for me.

(Could somebody still post an example please :) )

Thanks for the advice.

24mm f16 on a 5D Andy

Andy,

24mm is my preferred option for landscapes on the 5D/5D2. I'm not a fan of ultra-wide and 24mm seems to be the limit before foreground stuff starts to become a little distorted...volume anamorphosis to you and I.

I can't find a shot at the moment as a lot of my stuff is still packed after the move.

Bob

Welcome Andy :)

All my others are on the other PC so I just had a quick root to see what I had kicking about that I could link to :)

24mm is a bit of a funny one on the FF cameras mainly because of the 24-105mm f4! The 24mm f2 is a stonking little prime that lurks in my bag for low light stuff, the 24-70mm is perhaps a victim of it's own success, it just does what it says on the tin, gets on with it and provides cracking images at most of the right focal lengths, very versatile.

And then there is the 24-105 f4. The best doorstop you will ever buy........and yet it's hardly off my 1Ds!! How the heck does that work! Well, unless I need to go below f4 it's actually a very, very capable lens and having 105mm at the top end does mean that for shooting people it's absolutely blooming fabulous! Used between 40mm and 105mm it's excellent and built like a tank. At 24mm however you do get rather a lot of barrel distortion. I'd much rather swap to one of the others at 24mm.

So like most things it depends what you want to shoot at 24mm that would influence which of the 24mm options would be best for you.

Have you got one already on the 40D?

 Bob.

(Congrats on the move!)

Many thanks for the advice.
I was wondering actually if 24mm would be a bit distorted......

Thanks again.

Ali, I have the 40D and 24-105!!!!

I also have a Tokina 12-24, and I have no complaints at all about that setup.
12mm is plenty wide enough on the 40D, and does a pretty good job.
I'm really just wondering about changing to FF with minimal costs. I wouldn't want to change the whole setup, as it would be too costly.

Many thanks for the advice.

Hmmmm just thinking what the Tokina would look like on FF!!

Just check compatability with your current lenses. Some don't fit from 1.6 to FF because the mirror assembly on the FF swings into the space at the back of the lens and some mounts are too deep to fit. The Sigma 10-20 being one example. The EF-S lenses don't fit either. Well, they do fit physically but they make a mess when it all goes whack!

 That would be insane!!!!

The only lenses I have is the 24-105mm F4 L, 70-200mm F4 L, Tokina 12-24mm and the nifty fifty.
I would have to lose the Tok to put towards the cost of the 5D. Sadly :(

Why don't you just take a shot at 15mm with your 40D? It will look exactly the same, and you'll have the advantage of knowing what the entire scene looked like. In fact you don't even ned to take a phot. Just set your lens to 15mm and walk around looking through the viewfinder.

I mean, that shot by AliB was nice, but you could do the same with a 200mm lens if you had the rigt vantage point. You can't really learn anything about the lens unless you know what that scene actually looks like from the place where te phto was taken.

Damn! You mean I got up at stupid O'clock and sat by a lake in -5deg for nothing? I could have stayed in bed and shot it out the window on 200mm? Now you are talking! :D

I am also considering 5D, except most landscape work for me is over until next spring due to weather, work and I need a car first. By then mk2 may be a more sensible option as mk1 is still around £900 2nd hand and probably very heavily used by now. I think I'll keep 40D as a backup since I am planning doing weddings on weekends when I am less busy.

P.S. I read somewhere Tokina may be OK up to 19mm -ish on 5D (16mm on 1D), which is 12mm equiv.

I've been looking at 5D1 (or 5D Classic as someone on here called it, lovely name!) and I've seen them going less than that. There was one I very nearly bought on here a couple of weeks ago (and kind of wish I had now), I'm just in that annoying place where I haven't quite made up my mind which body.

Hi Andy,

I've just had a peek at your pics and think that you may recognise the attached subject - I've been doing the same thinking - 5d or 50d in my case. I borrowed a couple of cameras and did the following test. Ignor the black corners as in the 5d image, which were caused by my also experimenting with filters that were too small for the 24 -105 lens but gave the ghist of what I wanted.

James

Thanks guys for all the help and advice on this one.
I'm not ready just yet to make the move. Maybe next year :naughty:

But this thread has certainly given me something to think about.

Again, thanks to everyone for your input
