One of the lightning deals today was an Invicta watch reduced from 521 to 65 (pounds). What a bargain! The deal ended a few minutes ago so it's back up to 521.

The same watch is on Amazon.com for $69.99.

I have a high opinion of Amazon, but that seems like a rip-off.

Why would anyone spend £65 on a watch (never mind £521)

Because they don't want to buy cheap crap? I'm easy either way, I've £18 Timex watches for work and £100+ watches for dress and I'd spend more for something that I liked enough.

Indeed, just because Amazon are selling it for £521 doesn't mean it's worth that. I buy from Amazon regularly but they have become much more cynical about their trading habits over the years.

:bang:

Because you cannot buy a TagHeuer.. for less than £65... well not a genuine one....

mine was £500 from an "outlet store."

Sorry but the phrase "more money than sense" comes to mind. But, each to his own I guess.

Someone who owns a £50 P&S camera might say that about someone who owns a D700 ;) They both take pictures don't they?

Am sure many people question why we spend more than £200 on a camera.

Looking at my recent efforts, so do I!..................

That's not really a valid comparison. There is a marked difference in functionality between a good DSLR and a point and shoot camera.

I guess expensive watches are best thought of as jewelry rather than as something to check what the time is.

Really?

So how about going diving with a £5 watch from Argos then?

The same applies to a cheap calculator watch off the market, and an Omega that'll allow it to work at extreme depths/pressures. Both are watches, one just has the edge on functionality....

Yes I can see that if you need a watch for diving or working in other extreme environments then a watch with a specific functionality is important. However, I get the impression more often people buy expensive watches because they want a particular look and like the fact that it is expensive and has a famous brand name. That's not a problem. Personally I would not buy designer label clothes or an hugely expensive watch. But I can see that some people get pleasure from those things.
What I find slightly difficult to understand is why people can't just say that it's a form of jewelry rather than going on about using it for diving.

And the sudden influx of consumer SLR's isn't for exactly the same purpose? :naughty:

[devils advocate mode off] :D

Someone once told me that his Omega was "the Moon watch" or something. The closest he'd been to the Moon was the cheese aisle at Sainsbury's! :D

Wow! That's a deep and profound question. Let me know if you come up with an answer. :-)

it was a serious question i thought you might answer. on your logic why buy anything luxurious? a lot of photographers would be out of business if nobody bought canvases/prints of their work which i guess you could put in your same "more money than sense" category.

My response was serious also. That is deep problem/question which I feel is at the root of many of the worst problems in society. I don't have any answer.

as long as its not on a borrowed source of funds (or if it is, for a car for example, that its easily within means) i dont see the problem.

We are possibly going a bit OT and getting a bit deep. But, I do feel very uneasy about consumerism. I may be conflating different issues, however it seems somehow wrong that we spend huge wads of dosh on trinkets when children are dying for the want of cheap medicines or clean water.

I agree but I'm sure you've set off a realism alarm somewhere! It's safer to just watch the sports and consume the labels like you're supposed to. :)

To be fair, with regard to the Calculator watch Vs the priceless Omega diving watch, I'd go for the caluclator simply for the fact I could do this:

Last time I checked it was my money, I had earned it, and I could spend it on what ever I wanted to .... so long as it was OK with the wife :D

+1

I work hard to earn my money, I will spend it on what I wish and if anyone wants to judge me for that then they are the ones with a problem, not I.

absolutely and thats why I wear the Rolex that my wife bought me :)

Or do you wear the Rolex simply because the wife bought it for you?
If it were a Timex, would you wear it because it has the same sentimetal value?
Just wondering :D

Good Lord..

So I take you you dont live in a nice house, with a TV, oven, fridge, microwave, chairs, tables, carpets..
I guess you dont drive a car or ride a bicycle...

I guess you give all the money you earn to the dying children, because they need medicine far more than you need any of the above?

I own about 20 watches, ranging from around £20 to £1200.
Why do I need 20 watches?...

Because I worked hard and bloody wanted them. :bang:
