Does that mean I wasn't in hard mode like I thought?

Depends what you mean by “wrong”. In hard mode you can reuse a completely wrong letter or put a yellow letter in the same place again or an additional copy of a yellow in any place. I think you can’t leave out or move a green letter. I think you can’t omit a yellow letter entirely. The rule only says “Any revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses”
