It’s a favourite term used by US politicians I think, about their opponents, so I’ve read it a lot lately. Trump in particular uses that or a version of it all the time.

It’s them. I read the NYT and come across a lot of words that, from doing Wordless & other NYT games, I realise that I recognise when reading them but they don't come to mind when searching (my brain presumably) for answers ㋡.

Not just the US, I read the Australian edition of the Guardian and it uses a lot of terms (especially in political stuff) that are completely non-UK English.
