Same here but in this case of the two possibles one was common but I felt the other could be an American term for something that I know happens in their game even though I didn’t know it was, so I took a puntThat would explain it..........

I think the OED is no good here as the words are not English but American
. Merriam-Webster Webster gives “an ancient Hebrew unit of capacity equal to about 10¹/₂ or later 11¹/₂ bushels or 100 U.S. gallons (378 liters)“ as the first (which obviously is what first occurred to me ) but your pigeon is the third.
