I will be driving aprox 200 miles tomorrow from northern England to Cardiff in Wales to pick my girlfriend up from uni, in Cardiff they have a "winter wonderland" with a big wheel, ice rink lots of lights and lots of happy faces

I want some of the Ice rink with some nice motion blur from the people skating and a long exposure of the bigwheel to get some light trials, the one thing that is concerning me to the point of not taking my cam with me is children.... Im quite shy taking pic in public as it is but with it being a kids sort of place im a bit bothered someone is going to say something

probably be me just being daft, ive never really done street photography, but its bothering me

Sounds silly, but make it obvious you are snapping your girl and the wheel and no one should then think otherwise. :)

If you're wide angle than people won't be able to tell what you're photographing...well, not as well if you were pointing 300mm in their direction! :)

You'd best hope it's not one of those ones that's been mentioned in the rags in the past couple of weeks!

That was just down the road from me, has been shut down now.
 
Sorry to say but you may have some trouble. I was shooting in Leeds two years ago and despite being over 100m from the rink I had jobsworth security telling me I could not take pics because of "kiddie porn laws"

If you do get accosted just make it plain that you are not breaking any laws taking pics in public (make sure it IS a public place and not private property) and if others are using point and shoot or phone cams then they politely point out that you will stop when they are all told to.

Good luck, it would be a shame to lose the opportunity.
 
I went there last year with my wife and daughter and had no trouble at all taking shots.
