Yes
I visited a camera shop (better not name it!) in Sussex today.

I've been thinking of getting a new camera bag and was impressed by Lowepro Mini Trekker AW in the store. Don't normally do rucksacks but this was a good one.

The price in the store was £109 which was more than I was prepared to pay. Looked on Amazon when I got home and the price was just over £76 a saving of around 30%!!! I then went on Camerapricebuster and using two discount codes could get the same bag , delivered free, for just £58.22!!!

Now compared to the price of £109 that's quite a saving!

I know shops have overheads etc but no wonder some struggle to survive and the recession will not help.

I bet it is a struggle as they have larger overheads.

I try to purchase local if i can and i dont mind paying more within reason

When I bought my Lowepro Slingshot, the difference between Jessops shop price and the webprice that Tecno were selling it (delivered) at was about the same, at around a 1/3, which wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't one and the same company :suspect:

I noticed this too with Lowepro products at my local outdoor/photography store

I paid £48 for a Lowepro Fastpack 250 in Jessops today, which is £6 cheaper than amazon.co.uk.

Throw £50 my way, you can have one I hardly use? It's a nice wee bag alright, but I prefer the earlier non AW model, if I'm honest. More room for food/water/waterproofs when hillwalking!

Mine even has Practical Photography embroidered onto it!

Thanks, im just about to order a Mini Trekker AW and this has came in handy.I take it you just add both codes at the checkout section.

It will be interesting how internet companies like Amazon will deal with customer requests for information when all high street shops have closed down.

I try and go local. I got my FL-36R for £180 (normal price, not a sale price or anything) in my local, that's only £10 dearer than even WHX! And £20 CHEAPER than Jessops. I can't see the shop being too cheap to run either, although it's small it's on prime real estate seconds from Weymouth esplanade and the marina. Just goes to show that shops don't always charge high prices because they have to, I honestly think some are just rip-off merchants.

Customer and expert reviews and an excellent returns policy, almost equating to try before you buy.

i tried jessops today for a lens, waste of time :( normally the staff are quite helpfull, not today though, and they wouldnt price match so im not spending £70 over the online price of somehwere else.

and if they survive when they get 50% of the products returned because the customer couldn't nip down the jessops currys or PC world to see what it looked like before he ordered it.

I have found alot of staff (not all) in my experience to usually be pretty ingnorant in camera shops. There all well and good to read off the stats sheet and tell me the basics of anything, but a five second search on the net brings up pages of concise professional advice on any product. As well as this it tends to be unbiased as much of it is written by consumers rather than someone trying to tell you something.

Anything i can't find i post a quick question on here and within minutes a informed useful answer.

Shop rent is going through the roof, and they have to recoup it somehow, but 30% is hard to pay when you get very little customer service in return, so there is very little value added to the product in that respect.

Perhaps if landlords and buy-to-letters were a bit more reasonable, shops might be better placed to compete with on-line prices?

Lets be fair guys. Yes the high street needs our cash, but the little guy getting taxed out of his brains is only going to buy from 1 place.. The cheapest!

dear god... the Lowepro Slingshot 200AW is £80.99 at jessops and only £29.99 at jacobs?!!! thats a HUGE price difference!!!
