hi guys, just after a general opinion, i'm new to photography and am looking at getting my first DSLR:shrug:. my question is what would you go for either a second hand nikon D60 or a new sony A390. i havent got a clue what advantages one has over the other so thought i'd ask the experts :)

A S/H one went in the classifieds earlier for 360 :) so it is very possible to get it on the top range of your budget, I wouldn't go for a D60 no matter what it does not offer much if any benefits over the D40 which you can find for less than 150£ s/h and leaves you with plenty of cash.

Have you checked the K-r from Pentax? Great camera, with built in stabilisation for 400 with two lenses....

What about a used D80. Have a feel of a Sony camera and Nikon one and see which you like the feel of. Also do you have any friends who have either as you may be able to share the lens with them if you opt for one the have.

my father in-law (chelski) has a nikon d5000 and it was after having ago of it at waddington air show that made me decide i wanted an dslr. just really dont know where to start:bonk:

In that case and assuming you can get the use of his lens, go into a shop like Jessops and have a feel of the different Nikons available to see which feel comfortable. You can then decide what you want.

I bought a second hand D80 with the 18-135 kits lens last year and I paid £415. Have a look at MBP photography they have a number of second hand Nikon.
