hi all

I'm after some advice on flashguns and their interaction with ST-E2 heads and canon kits.

I normally shoot sport or gig photography when I've touched on anything commissioned, and so flash guns aren't always required.,.
however, i'm looking more at studio lighting. for this purpose though I'm normally actually in a studio. so I don't see the point of getting a full 2-3 light starter kit.
However, I've been roped into an event (prom type thing) later in the year.
I've done wedding type group shots before for a friend with two canon speedlites and softboxes, (indoor and controllable) and i'd like to do this event with a similar setup because I don't think that I can trail wires around the place
I was going to use:
camera 1 with two flashes remotely triggered.
camera 2 with a single onboard flash for candids.
I have a single 580exII at present
so my question was, if I get two cheaper 3rd party flashguns, which are actually okay, and which work fairly well with the ST-E2 trigger?

I've been looking at the yongnuo system.
bless the chinese market, but these look like they can work with an ST-E2 clone pretty well. I don't need ratio, etc.

has anyone used these or similar?
for power I can use battery packs, but I'd like something portable and with options for outdoor location lighting and back-ups for my other sports photography if needed.
feedback and suggestions appreciated. thanks

Do the 2 flashguns need to be triggered by an ST-E2 if they are static then you can set them to manual and get away with buying something like 2 Yongnuo 560IIs and then a couple RF-603s you wont have ETTL but it'll be cheaper and you can trigger them from a greater distanc also if your in a prom they'll be flashing lights & strobs etc.. not sure how they will affect the range of the ST-E2.

basically if I can use the ST-E2 then it's a neat solution for all of my other plans tbh.
ideally I'd just have a pocket wizard or two but they're pricey

ST-E2 is for shooting with ETTL wiressly then your pretty much stuck with 430EX or a 580EX I believe as well as the older 550 etc..

ST-E2, or the rather better and cheaper Yongnuo clone, will master any gun with E-TTL remote slave capability. Several of the better third party guns have this.

Remember that with something like the ST-E2 you'll need line of sight to trigger the speedlites, if someone or something comes between you and the lights they'll not fire...

cheers
I've used them remotely before and it's always better to be RF.
but I think I've used cheapo triggers before,
but some of the ones in the middle ground look okay
will do some serious testing before the gig

a bit more of a google

looks like the Yongnuo YN565EX can be triggered by the ST-E2
about £105 a piece. so Might try one out
