A 1.6x crop question....I want to shoot @ 35mm

Basically I want to turn my hand to shooting at 35mm (with my 18-55 kit lens).

Now...With my 30D and its 1.6x crop body...Do I set my lens to the unmarked 22mm setting (which x1.6=35.2mm)

Or do I set it to 35mm on the lens, but it will just give me a cropped view.

It's basically for the perspective of 35mm, that's the reason.
I also want to restrict myself and try and use my Adidas Zooms and think more about composition. Sort of a little task.

So, 22mm or 35mm?

why 35mm? did you just pick 35 as a random number out of the air?

What focal length are instant cameras set at? Or does that vary.
 
35mm (as in 35mm camera) is the actual width of the film Bod. :) The 'standard' lens on a 35 mm camera is usually 50 or sometimes 55mm. I'd guess what you're tying to do is limit yourself to shooting with the equivalent of a standard lens in which case you're on the right track.

I suppose you mean fixed a focal length compact? I'd guess it will vary mate. If it takes 35mm film then it's likely to be around 50mm although some will have a shorter focal length to give a wider 'all purpose' field of view.

You could always get one. :D
 
Many rangefinder and similar cameras with 35mm film also came with lenses of about 35mm focal length. 50mm is more a "standard" in SLRs

Thats what I meant...lol You said it better than me.

So, 50mm is the focal length to aim for then? (Or thereabouts).

OK, then I'll rephrase the question...
Do I use the kit lens and set it to 31mm, or 50mm?

Well if it is standard lens on a 35mm slr format you want to go for then yes, set your kit lens to 31mm.

50mm (x 1.6) will give you the same perspective as 80mm on 35mm format film (or full frame).

You always adjust the focal length on the lens by the body's fovc factor to get the "true" 35mm film or ff perspective.

Actually, be sure to go ever so slightly beyond the 31mm mark as 31mm will only give you 49,6mm and this could be seen as going towards wide angle....
 
31 X 1.6 = 49.6, so close enough! :)
 
It was just confusing me with the markings on the kit lens

That dot is basically the lens at its shortest point (go either side and it extends). What focal length would that be...anyone know?
And what's that marking between 18 and 24mm?
 
I don't own a kit lens but take a piccie and check out the exif why don't you:p
 
on your camera, 50mm to to get the same perspective and 35mm to get the same view as a full frame body. :)
