Semi-inspired by johb I plan to take a photo on the 27th of every month. Not many people know but I'm adopted. Sept 27th 2008 I will be 30. So my plan is to document those 9 months. I want to show I've been worth it, so to speak. It might sound silly but there's a tiny part of my brain that does make me think that I was a Xmas accident. In 9 months I'm 30 and despite a lot of things going wrong with my life I want to show that I've done something worth doing. Whether its just taking a bloody good photo on the 27th to show that its who I am, or whether it involves doing something worthy of being alive on that day for I don't know. Either way it starts tomorrow. So I need some inspiration of something I could do, or photograph to start the journey. Maybe I should ask some random girl out on the street, and marry her 9 months later.... haha no, that wouldn't work :)

Edit: Actually I think I've come up with the first shot. Typical :D But Ideas are appreciated.

Pete, speaking as one 'accident' to another...
I cant help but imagine that your adoptive parents must be very proud of where your artistic direction is taking you in life.

Inspired by Dod's 'year in pictures' I too have decided to try & capture one pic per month.
The idea is for a kind of 'Best Of Year Collection' at the end of 2008.

Hmmm!!! pics for tomorrow?
What about attempting to capture some of the Christmas Sale madness around town at the moment.
You know, the crowds/queues, the traffic jams, the huge 'Sale' signs everywhere.
There's always the post-christmas blues aound too!

If its to be a more personal voyage in pictures,
what about starting with your street, your home, your first toy, or something that relates to some of your first memories.
Will be interested to to see/here how you go. :)

A self portrait might show lots of people that you are worth it, especially those that adopted you. A simple straight black and white, almost passport-type mug shot should be enough - maybe a hug as well..
From my position, you are worth it for the little nuggets of advice that I have picked up from you.
Good Luck !

Yeah they are :) I give out prints as gifts now because I know they'll be what people will love.

I think it really has to be personal. I can shoot Christmas madness any year. I can only shoot something relating to my birth tomorrow. I've got an idea. It may not be the best photo ever, but its not the point. The point is to show I was a good mistake.

I think a self portrait will be in there somewhere.

Unfortunately I don' t know it. It seems a bit um cliched though.

Sorry pete, cant think of anything original atm, though you have given me an idea for a year long project of my own, starting in February, when I turn 39, last year of my 30's kind of thing, so looking forward to ideas from other people as well as well as coming up with a few of my own.

Imo, any human being is "worth it"!
No need to 'prove' or 'justify' that! Quite the contrary: you are "worth it" until clearly proven otherwise (in a court of law).

Simply enjoying life - and shooting some breathtaking photos! - is all the justification you need.

Have fun, Pete!

Pete, Ive had a think about this and if I was going to go about it I would try to do it on a sort of age basis over 9 months. So starting out with something very very young ( spring flowers etc) then on to something a bit older or somewhere significant in your life ie first school etc then onwards. I dont know if i have explained it that well but just my ideas. Regards Jim

Hmmm, sounds interesting. Spring flowers aren't quite me though. :) But how do you fit 30 years into 9 photos? I think my actions on those days should be the proof of my existence, maybe.

People and places that have shaped your life.

Good luck with this Pete.

Fitting 30years into 9 photos, is going to be a good challenge.
For at least a couple of shots why don't you take pics of something / someone that inspired you in a part of those 30 years.

That's my idea. My brain is now tired!!

I think this is going to be a very tough challenge indeed! I know you are a brilliant photographer but is it possible to fit all of the experiences and emotions you have felt over 30 years in 9 pictures? No matter what the answer is to that question I still think this is a good project and I can't wait to see the outcome!

On another note, I think the work you have done so far proves that you have a brilliant talent and are definately someone a parent can be proud of!! You don't need to prove anything to anyone including yourself...just take a look at what you have achieved and captured so far!

Corny I know, but your work is one of my favourites in the forum and you should be proud of it ;)

Pete,

Surely you have to start with a shot that symbolises "conception" in some artistic form without any smuttiness creeping into it....ie, not a milk tanker going into the Mersey Tunnel....and that wasn't meant to be funny.

Having seen your work, youre far more able than I am to find something truly symbolic from your persperctive.

Bob

I want to show that I've done something worth doing.

I know you said you wanted to take new photos to document the next 9 months but you want to show something you've positive or worthy you've done also.

Maybe you could pull up something from your achieves also and make a slide show of your travel photos like a best of like the best of Toronto and the best of Edinburgh In one slideshow for example. There deffo something worthy you've done.

Right now Pete...... It's easy. Start now with mum and dad, of whom you are most proud, (and they, of you of course) and work back in years.

There now.... Simple, isn't it.;)

David.

Interesting idea but I think I don't need a photo to represent conception. Me being here is proof enough that I'm here. I need to validate my existence.

I know you said you wanted to take new photos to document the next 9 months but you want to show something you've positive or worthy you've done also.

Hmm I'm not sure. A new project should be fresh and this one is quite different to anything I've done. I will be going to Toronto and Edinburgh so either way I could get those images if need be.

I think the talk you gave about HDR should be included or referenced to in some way as that was a pretty big stepping stone for you to actually get infront of a group of people and talk about a subject that can start quite heated discussions.

Hmm. I think I'm getting a bit lost in whether this is documentary of what I've done or whether its documentary proving that I exist for good reason. I feel its the latter. On the 27th its not so much looking back, as looking forward. Using my photography to show that on that day I proved that its all been worthwhile.

Pete,

However you decide to put this together, I wish you the best of luck. Haveing seen some of your shots here I have every confidance that you'll come up with the right images.

Go for it !!

I don't know if this has been suggested already but... how about taking a photo per month this year and having them made into a calender for next year. Could make a nice christmas present next christmas.

There isn't really enough time to do that. I'd need 12 images and I'd need the calendars ready by about November. Plus, I feel its a very personal project not a commercial one.

How about a picture of someone looking in the mirror then take another of an older person looking into same mirror and edit so it looks like the younger one is looking at the older one ?

Hmmm nah. I'm sorry but that doesn't fit what I'm trying to do. Its not so much about my age, its my existance. 9 photographs taken 30 years after I was conceived to proof that I'm worth it. I dunno. I'm still not sure exactly what I want them to be. I do feel that I know what I don't want them to be though.

I guess its quite hard for people to suggest stuff for you and even though you dont know exactly what you want I think you'll know when you actually get the shots themselves that it was worth the effort. You are a fantastic photographer and a great person to talk to so imo I think you were 'worth' it :)

I'm thinking you could aim for three sets of three, the first group covering your childhood ...the second you teen to adult,.... the last three your professional years, your acheavements.

Each set of 3 need also be split into other perspectives.

a. You as judged/seen by a friend. (your interpretation of that view)
b. You judged/seen by the inner you. (dito)
c You judged/seen by the person you'd like to please the most...In my case my father. (dito)

All shots must be an honest representation of you life.

...just assembling something like this will help clarify your existence.

Pete, why not show the worth of other people in the photos? I think that's one way to demonstrate your own worth - by showing you appreciate, accept and understand others?

at greenwich on meridian line take photo at time you were born on if you know it. one foot in past one in future. even moving leg from past getting blurred effect symbolising your moving on

http://www.nmm.ac.uk/server/show/nav.2904

Nice idea, but you're confusing the Greenwich Meridian with The International Date Line. AFAIA, the only place on line where you can technically have one foot in the today and on in tomorrow is in Fiji (I've done it, but the photos are negs and not scanned in otherwise I'd share them) but as you can see from the map, the date line doesn't follow the180º line of longitude all the way.

I quite like some of your thoughts. I think the problem though is that I can't remember a lot of my childhood and my teens / early adult life was a complete waste. :D I have a useless degree in Software Engineering. I honestly don't feel like I started doing anything with my life till photography, which is why I want to use these 9 shots to "prove" that its all been worth it.

To add to the rest of the ideas, how about trying to find good in an innercity or derelict area, or show how people help themselves and others.

If you can just make one person think and see good where others would walk past by taking the pictures then that would be justification in itself.

I can relate to much of what you said in your last post myself Pete, lol ...

... the method I mentioned, in a way a kind of self contemplation, can be altered to fit anything ...like for instance you could make it 3 sets of shots on your view of your past, present and potential future....

'Proof' is another matter, I guess if you can honestly say to yourself that any other life would have meant your not in a position to be the photographer that you are... then ok. ... but then you wouldn't be who you are taking photos like you do if you hadn't had your life, so... end of really. :D

Photograph the people around you that represent your life, the loved ones that make your life 'worth it', maybe making an effort to get in touch with distant or lost friends to capture them too and at the same time, rekindling old friendships.

If your going to do something along these lines Ithink you need to show the journey with the first shot symbolising a beginning, perhaps a hospital? the end needs to be somthing to show where you are then. Some of your fantastic shots already show that.

It's all very interprative but i think you need to try an show an element of the person behind the camera

yeah your right m8........ must be getting old lol
