Yes
I had a search but couldn't find anyone with direct experience of both.

Has anybody had both of these lenses and chosen one over the other?

From what I can tell they are identical in build and with only a fraction more speed with the 85mm, is it literally a case of which focal length you prefer?

I'm leaning towards the 100mm but would love to hear others opinions.

I've never used the 100 but did own the 85.
It's a great lens, light, fast AF and lovely bokeh. It's optically very similar to the 100. You can't go wrong with either.
I sold my 85 as I had the 135l and I rarely used the 85 as the FL wasnt that different.

Have you considered the new Sigma 85 1.4?

I had a 100mm f2 some time ago and wished I had never got rid of it. The quality was excellent as was the af, I am awaiting delivery of an 85mm 1.8 but due to stock issues I don't know when I'm getting it. I would agree with what you say, it's down to your preferred focal length imo.

ive got the 85mm but that works for my line up.

50mm to 85mm = 35mm jump
85mm to 135 = 50mm jump
Looking at getting a 28mm lens so a jump to 50mm would be 22mm

having said that its important with your existing lenses and other lenses you plan to get you make sure you are not going to have any obvious gaps or lenses to close to each other.

I've got 85mm since I already had 100mm macro. 85mm is somewhat sharper than the macro and has nice bokeh - but slightly wider. I think you can't go far wrong with either

Thanks everyone.

I have both at the moment. I already had the 100mm f2 (and love it) but had the opportunity to pick up an 85mm f1.8 for a low price, so did.

For the next week I shall be shooting and testing between the two to decide which one to keep. :D

Let us know how you get on, I have the 100mm f2 and I absolutely adore it on the 5d, I'd be interested to see how it compares to the 85mm

I am the other way round and annoyingly v. interested in this even though i love the 85mm i have. Can you let me know how well the 100 f/2 handles CA?

Lee.

As a portrait lens and bokeh machine, 135L is surely the pick on full frame?

I've never had the 100mm f2, but the 85 1.8 is a cracker. It's one of those lenses that gives you 'dreamy' bokeh. Get one - you won't regret it.

I've got one. I've got both. :D

That's the reason for the testing, to decide which one to keep. If any.;)

I dont think the 135mm F/2L USM should be left out....it is an awesome lens.....!!! as good as mine 200mm F/2L IS USM in term of sharpness
