85 1.8 FF vs 50 1.2 Crop

Well, the 50 is a massively overrated lens - not much better than the 1.4. The 85 performs above its weight. Depends on what crop you put it on and what shooting conditions.

The crop would be probably a 50d and the FF would be a 5d classic. Designed to be a combo for my 5d and 35mm 1.4 for wedding and portraits.

Get the 85mm f1.8 and the 50mm f1.4 siggy and use them on both bodies! All sorts of permutations then and 3 brilliant lenses!

Agreed!

The thing is that all the the permutations with the 50 are pretty much doubles focal length wise. I appreciate I would get to use it full frame which us a bit of a bonus but not sure I'm going to benefit much from it tbh

But when using 2 different cameras. For what you are doing the 5D is probably the better camera than the 50D and it would be nice to have the 50mm for that. Also if you get the 85mm too, it will be roughly equivalent in its field of view to a 135mm. If I had a full frame camera I would have the 50 and 85 and then probably a 28mm, but then I am a bit funny like that!

I have also got. The 100mm is macro which gives me 100 and 160. I'm not convinced ill be that fused about having 50mm as I had the Canon 1.4 and I just found it boring. I know most people love 50mm but I can take it or leave it.

Then don't get one then! ;)

What I mean is that I'd get one to only use on a crop or is get an 85 to only use ff. My set up is 35 with 5d and 100 with 50d but I want a third body and I think I'm edging toward another ff and the 85 at the moment.

5D and 85 1.8 are made for each other.

Matt

Using the same lenses on two different format camera really doesn't work very well. I would think about rationalising that first (get a 5D2?) and then you're lens choices will become easy and logical :)

What you're trying to do would drive me mad!

What I'm trying to do is
5d +35
5d +85
50d +100

I said I didn't want to use the same lens on different formats so I'm not quite sure what you mean.

I have a similiar set up:

5D with 35mm F2
7d with 135mm F2

And the Canon 50mm F1.4 to swap between as needed.

I am convincing myself I dont need the 85mm:thumbs:

Your OP says 50 1.2 on a crop...

But if you can keep things separate like that, then the decision makes itself.

Yeah what I'm trying to decide is whether the middle of the 3 is
5d +85 or
50d +50

Either way I have to buy another body and lens. Or I could just get a 40d even and use the 100 on that at weddings. Hope this makes sense. I probably should have explained it all better to start with.

Well, for weddings etc, I'd standardise on full frame and get a cheapy cropper strictly as emergency back up. Just makes everything easy and straightforward. With two full framers, would you really need that back up at all - maybe give it to a second shooter?

Thought - 5D2 is an 8.2mp camera when cropped down to 1.6x format - basically the same as a 40D. I use my 5D2 like that, ie shot of a couple, one is blinking but the other is a really good capture - you can still pull a decent print out of it. So many more options with full frame, not to mention gorgeous quality and great ISO performance

Well I got my 50d for when I use my 300 f4 so I'll keep that. Don't think I can afford a 5d2 though. Especially not with a lens as well unless I used the 100 is macro with it. I would have to sell my 24-105 as well. Hmmm

I am a 50d user and that is exactly my wish list of lenses. I plan one day to upgrade to 5d too.

Canon 35mm 1.4
Sigma 50mm 1.4
Canon 85 1.8

And then one day either the Canon 135 2.0 or the Canon 70-200 2.8 (to replace my 70-200 f/4).

Oh well looks like my decision is going to be made as I've got a sale on a 85 1.2 once I've sold me 24-105 and Olympus pen. So I got the best of all worlds.....

Looks like I'm too late but I just wanted to add the Siggy 85mm f1.4 to the mix as some think it's better than the Canon 85mm f1.2 and looking at the Canon 85mm f1.8 I think that the Siggy has much much better bokeh and it's faster too so it looks like an easy choice unless money is the deciding factor.

Cheers. Someone else mentioned that to me but think I will go for the Canon as its a reasonable price and I just want it so bad.
