800mm lens for Sony Alpha (dodgy or not?)

It's a mirror lens - they are cheap, fixed aperture, and generally poorer quality when comparinog to most lenses

However they do give a very long focal length so are useful for things like shooting the moon as you're going to use a tripod so the low aperture isn't an issue
 
well it is the cheapest way to 800mm
but

Fixed @ F8
Manual focus
Optically pants as it uses a mirror to achieve that focal length

So if you want 800mm without really wanting good image quality then fine. Otherwise *****

I think most of us have looked at cheap mirror lenses at least once during our photographic journey and when we discover the price of branded long lenses, we look at them again........:D

Yes most defiantly. It gives me a headache! Mirror lens are useful for astronomy where there shouldn't be so many situations where the brokeh can cause distortion.

Ohhhhhhhhhh yes, I'm going through that stage right now.
 
I had a vague recollection from about 15 years ago of buying a 500mm mirror lens to go with my Minolta film SLR at the time. I thought both were long since lost but looking through some old boxes in the garage last weekend I found the lens!

I then discovered that a T-mount that I have for my D60 fitted the lens so I gave it a try and suddenly remembered why I hadn't used it for 15 years :)

It's not the easiest thing to handle or use and the results were.....disappointing. I'll reserve judgement when I get a chance to do some moon shots but I suspect it's going to go off to fleabay. :(

The best mirror lenses i ever tried were the tamron 500mm and the sigma 600mm you have to be careful with them as they are more fragile than a normal lens london camera exchange sell the ones you have seen go and ask them if you can try one on your camera nothing beats a prime canon 600mm f4 i.s but if you are on a tight budget have a look at a sigma 170-500mm the early ones sell for as little as £225.00
