Hello, looking at getting something a bit wider as my 28mm 1.8 is wide as i have.

I am thinking about selling the 28mm and go for a 17-40mm f4, any good, i have heard mixed reviews about it on a crop sensor.

Anything else i should really be looking at, i dont have loads to spend on one and its not something i will need all the time so the idea of selling the 28mm n putting say £100 towards the 17-40mm (second hand) would be perfect but unsure about it on a crop body.

Any other lenses i should consider, i have the canon 50mmm 1.4 so anything below that really.

Cheers,

Tyler

Canon 17-55 IS? much better lens for a cropped sensor. If you want to go for something cheaper than that how about the 17-50 Tamron? An excellent lens all around for a fraction of the price, you will be giving up image stabilisation and AF performance though. Both a f/2.8 which is a bonus. I guess the 17-40 only if you plan on moving to FF in the future but even then...

Having said that I wouldn't call either of those wide really so how about something like a 10-22 L?

I would consider the Canon EF-S 10-22mm for a cropped sensor. It seems a highly regarded lens.

Yeh i was thinking of the 10-22 but as i am selling my 28mm would still leave a rather big gap between the 50mm.

The canon 17-55 is an option but it costs a bit more and not sure if that would rule out my 50mm.

To many options

It would rule it out only if you want it to rule it out and if it does you can end up selling it and making even more of the cost of the 17-55.

The gap from 22-50 is noticeable I have found but nothing a good nice cheap 35mm f/1.8 cannot solve :)

Yeh i suppose i could sell the 50mm if i ended up not using it but would no something would come up then where i would need below 2.8.

Also any idea how much a 17-55 goes for second hand..?

I have a 17-55 f2.8 IS and still use my 50mm. I also have a Sigma 10-20 but only take it with me if I'm going on a specific landscape trip as the 17-55 is generally fine.

I know it's expensive, but well worth the investment, unless you are considering going FF in the future.
