Hi is it OK to use the same camera settings for video as used for stills
At the moment I take some shots then switch the 7D to video and shoot a short bit of video

Ive got a 7D and 550D and have shot short sequences of birds mainly puffins
Am going back to skokolm in the spring and want to do a lot more filming of the seabirds behavior
Will mainly be filming courtship behavior so the birds will be stationary

At the moment I'm just switching the 7D onto video mode after focussing using whatever settings are set to for still
For example shutter speed of 200 at F6.3 at ISO 400
Is this Ok , I have been getting nice quality film so far doing it this way
also have bought a tascam sound recorder to get better quality sound

Normally for video you set the shutter at twice the frame rate, so if in 1080HD then 1/50 or if 720 then 1/125 which is as near as possible to the respective 24fps and 60fps frame rates. Use aperture and ISO to adjust the exposure as required. I have my video settings on stored on C1 so a quick twist of the dial and I can have dedicated my dedicated settings 1/50 f11 and Auto ISO, gives me enough DOF to cater for manual focusing errors (the major problem shooting video on a DSLR) and works most of the time.

Thanks ken that's brilliant
Good idea using C1 and auto ISO will do that
So if I use auto ISO in manual mode and set the shutter and aperture I'm right in thinking that the camera will set the right exposure?
Is 24 p the right framerate if I'm going to be making a blue ray in hi def with Adobe elements premier video editor :)

Thats excellent , thanks for your help Ken :)
I did have a look on Google but just ended up being confused !
Something I did find out was that if the camera is in any other mode than manual like AV for example when you switch on video mode the the camera goes into auto mode and selects the settings itself
So I will use manual and auto ISO and save the settings onto C1 as you suggested :)
