Seeing as my laptop is on it's last legs (well the battery at least) I want to have a go at shooting tethered to my iPad via the USB connector (camera connection kit ?)

My 7D will only take CF cards so I can't use a WiFi card directly and I hear too many reliability issues sing a converter. So I want to know if it can be done via the USB port, and if so, what App do I need ?

And I don't want to "jailbreak" the iPad either....

Cheers

Can transfer images but can't be used 'live'. I borrowed one to try it and it does work but it's very slow.

Thanks, but I'm looking for a live tethered option. I've been searching the web but it looks like the only way to do it is either via a WiFi card, but they're not available in CF format, or via a remote monitoring app which allows you to see whats on your computer. Pretty pointless as the laptop screen is bigger than the iPad, and I'm trying not to use the laptop anyway :bang:

Looks like if I want to tether the camera I'll have to do it on the laptop and hope that the battery holds out.

Could you not get an SD to CF converter and use a wireless sd card.

You can, but from reading on the net they tend to be very hit and miss with regards to liability.

You may want to take a look at this app for the iPad if you use LR:

It's not a solution for shooting tethered but it still a good app to connect to your camera.

I've successfully used an older eye-fi card in a CF-SD adaptor with Shuttersnitch on the iPad, it works pretty well although range is poor, there is a theory (and some evidence) that if you remove some of the metal shielding on the adaptor the range improves. If you want I can shoot the set-up with model no.s etc. It also works out and about using my MiFi portable router.

This isn't tethering of course but it's the nearest you can get without the expensive Canon kit (AFAIK)

Three option really.

Shoot raw and small jpeg. Import the small jpeg into the iPad, takes about 1 sec per image over the usb camera connector. You have to put it all down somewhere stable as the leads tend to fall out.

Use a CF to SD convertor then an SD Wifi card. I've not tried this - seemed a bit of a faff.

Buy a new battery for the laptop. We use these people as they are cheap, aftermarket batteries which are usually higher powered and better than original
