Hey guys, I’m a wildlife photographer, since starting out in February last year I’ve been upgrading my kit, I started off with a 550D with a 55-250STM and now I’ve got a 7D with a sigma 150-600C, a 105 macro lens, 17-40mm for landscapes and general use and a 50mm for portraits.
I also have a decent tripod and a gimbal head.

So don’t get me wrong, the 7D use to be my dream camera back in the day when I use to do wildlife photography before I quit, and now I’ve had the chance to use it and it’s lovely! I do love it, but it really does frustrate me when it comes to auto focus and tracking birds in flight. Now before people say learn your camera and what not, I’m pretty good with it, I do get a lot of great shots, but I’ve got a bit of spare cash and was wondering, is the 7Dmk2 worth the extra £450 on top of my camera? Has anyone had first hand experience going from the 7D to the mk2?

Ive thought about lenses.. I don’t think the 500mm f4 would suit me as I love the ability to zoom in if I need to, I’ve had the 400mm f5.6, and yaah, great lens, not doesn’t give me that extra reach and no IS.

so any help would be great on this camera body.
All the best

I went from a 550d to a 7d2 about 5years ago, I have a sigma 150-600c with it. I am very pleased with this combination. I also have yet to find a better body to replace my 7d2. So I would say it’s a great upgrade

I've had mines for a few years and it's been great.

it does seem like it’s the best wildlife camera out there at the moment! Thanks for you reply mate.

Hi I went from a 7D to a 7D MK 2 and can definitely say that the MK2 is better for birds in flight
I can manage to photograph Puffins in flight using my MK2 which I was never able to do with my MK 1
They are small fast birds hard to shoot in flight
it maybe that my technique wasn’t good enough when I was using the MK 1 but when I tried again with my MK 2 the following year I was able to get some nice shots of them in flight
The autofocus tracking on the MK2 is definitely better though
