Hi,

I'm using my 7D with Elinchrom Style 400s - I read everywhere that the flash sync speed is 250th, but when I use this I get the black band from the curtain on my shots. It's fine when I back off to a 200th.

Could anybody advise what I've got wrong please?

Thanks for your help - Graeme. :)

Sometimes there is an ever-so slight delay in the fire signal reaching the flash which can account for stated sync figures not being reached.

I wouldn't worry about the 1/50th difference; unless you're trying to control the ambient outdoors (or in a massively bright interior) then you'll see no difference and even if you were using it to control ambient it only adds up to about 1/3rd of a stop difference.

Are you shooting in the studio? If so, you'll gain no advantage over say, shooting at 1/125th or 1/100th, by reaching the maximum sync - it's the flash that does all the work freezing movement. It's only when ambient light (which is controlled by the shutter speed) is brought into the equation that the flash starts to lose its dominance... :)

Hi Specialman,

Thank you for your response. I think I'll stop worrying about it then and stick to 125th, as it's studio shots I'm working on.
Appreciate your help - Graeme.

You shouldn't have any issues shooting at 1/125th. Good luck

You don’t mention how you are triggering the lights Graeme, are you using radio triggers or cable?

Hi Mark - thanks for helping out.

I'm using radio triggers (v.cheap radio triggers to be fair).

Give a sync lead a try. There is a latency with radio triggers, especially el-cheapo ones.
Yongnuo RF602 and RF603 are much batter for sync speeds.
Using a sync cable will at least let you know if the problem lies with your trigger/receiver setup

Hi Graeme, I willing to bet thats your problem. I found exactly the same thing the first time I used radio triggers in place of cables on my 7D. It the triggers not the 7D or the lights that are causing the delay.

As stated, its not going to cause you a problem but its always good to know what is causing the issue. Just plug a cable in to prove it if you need to

The originsl Skyports synced at 1/125th on my 5DII. Noit sure what the 7D syncs at but I'm just back from a days training where I used 1/160th on the 7D and the Skyport SPEED. I think that does allow 1/250th

The issue is almost certainly with the triggers. The sync cable should confirm that.

Thanks Guys - I'm going to try the sync cable just to bottom it out. Relieved to know it's not a major issue - thanks.
