I've recently purchased a 7D, upgrading from my 500D and looking to see if any settings should be altered 'from the box'? With my 500D I upped the sharpness and colour as standard as it needed it.

My first outing is on sunday at a MINI meet, and have very little time before hand to play with it.
What have you done, if anything to yours? Any custom picture styles or general tips for me to consider?

I took off the Silent Shooting mode because some one told me that you can't achieve full 8fps with it on. I suppose it depends if you need the speed or slightly quieter shutter.

I haven't a clue,

But please turn off the beeps for when you compress the shutter button !

haha, those really annoy me

It's really personal choice. I only shoot raw, so I have my camera configured to suit. If you shoot to JPEG then you would probably choose very different settings. I like to use back button AF. Others do not. I like highlight alerts enabled. Others do not. Some AF options are disabled by default (I think). I have enabled all, since they each have their uses. I've configured the DOF button to flip-flop AF modes. I think there are other possibilities for this button as well. You have to make your own choices about what suits you.

Whenever I buy a new camera I go through every item in every menu screen and decide how I wish each option to be set. If there is a setting I don't understand then I read the manual. Most things are self evident though, especially if you've owned a Canon body before. It doesn't really take long to get things the way I like them. I certainly don't always stick with the default settings. :)

i came from a 450D and i found that the 7D over exposed alot easyer so whatch out for that. as for the button config i found it to be pretty much sorted as it was.
shoot raw then you dont have to worry about picture styles you can change it all with your edit software.

I for one had to increase the sharpness and contrast a touch as it seemed a bit soft even with good glass. Much better now though. Also disabled the beep and tweaked the exposure settings. I set mine up for wireless flash as well, just in case. Personally I prefer not to have to edit every photo I take so most of the time I shoot Jpeg, but the 1 touch Jpeg/Raw button is great for when I get that special shot.
Most of my pics are straight from the camera as I personally think having to PP every shot takes the fun out of photography. I activly try not to PP as much as possible but thats the subject of another thread.

Many thanks for the replies, I'm leaving the button config standard till i've had a proper look through it. I've upped the sharpness slighty, and funnily enough was thinking about the contract also!

I've mainly shot in JPG, however looking to make the move to RAW soon.
