Hi,

1st post on this forum as i have only just discovered it and need some help.

i have the option to get a 60D or a 7D and all the options seem to weigh up even-ish. i currently have a 40D, 50mm 1.8, 18-200mm Sigma, 150-500mm Sigma, Nissin 622 flash, some triggers and cable releases, etc. so all my current attachments will work on either (i think). i have a varied interest in the type of photography i like as i have only had the 40D for around 18mths i have been doing a little bit of light trails, night exposures and some family shots stuff too but am discovering new things to try all the time. i like the idea of the 60D as it uses SD rather than CF so i can just dump all my images straight to my iPad on the fly and free up the cards (an also see them on a 9.7" screen to see if they are any good) then the 7D has less noise at higher ISO, better processor, and generally seems to be a better choice. but is this going to be replaced with a new version soon? does the 60D have anything that is better than the 7D as i am not fussed about the fold out screen. never done any videography before but will probably want to try this at some point so is one better than the other for that?

sorry its so many questions but i thought it would be an easy choice until i started to investigate!

what one do you think i should go for and why?

many thanks

The 7d is fairly well recognised as a wildife/action camera as it has a high frame rate, quick autofocus, dual digic 4 processors etc.
It is also very unforgiving on both poor technique and average glass. Ive had mine a while and feel im just starting to get to grips with it. Theres a few 7d threads click, click

What he said.

I've looked about regarding replacements and there is little info, it appears that a 5D Mk3 will probably appear first, toward the end of this year and then maybe a new 7D in the latter part of next year. This would (roughly) fit in with 3 year product life spans.

Given that the 50D replaced the 40D after a year and the 60D replaced the 50D after 2 its not impossible you'd see a 60D replacement around the same time or shortly after.

This is all guess work though, Canon appear quite tight lipped about new/forthcoming models.

7D is still fairly new and is packed more technology/features (so fast) than most canons and is especially good for action. It will be around for while with limited changes that you can be sure of. But you seem to be partial to portraits, night scapes and the like, have you looked at 5DMkII? It caters to the non action shots you mentioned, full frame and for the price as low as you'll see in terms of noise.

not sure the person getting it for me as a present can stetch to a 5D

7D

The 60D is a great consumer camera that has IMHO brought the XXD range down a few steps from the 40D and 50D. It's plastic, cough, sorry "polycarbonate" and has moved to SD card

As a back up to a sports/press tog the 7D is an option, whereas the 60D would not even get a look in :cuckoo:

BTW The 7D has no replacement in the pipeline

You say that the 7D has better high ISO but from what I've read although it's the same sensor some are claiming that the 60D actually performs better in this respect as (some say) it doesn't display the noise banding that some report in 7D shots.

Unless the additional bells and whistles such as the high frame rate and fancy focus system of the 7D are needed I myself would go for the 60D because of it's (possibly) better noise performance and possibly very useful articulated screen.

To be honest, if you aren't using your camera for the extremes of wildlife in motion or sport, I'd question whether you have actually explored it's full potential as yet. The 40D is still a seriously good camera, the only thing that it really misses is HD video.

In your position I think that you'd see more benefit in buying some better quality lenses first, which you would probably need to consider anyway if you got either the 60D or 7D, and will last you a lot longer than a new body.

I'd look at a decent secondhand copy of the 70-200mm f/4 IS and either the 17-55mm or 15-85mm. As for your iPad you can connect a CF card to it with the camera connection kit using a card reader.
