I've been using a 450D for the last 4 years and feel like it's time for a change I've tried both cameras and either would suite my needs perfectly but the 7D feels fantastic in the hand and the more advanced features and uprated processing obviously appeal to my tech geek side. The only question I have is should I? With rumors flying around about immanent replacements for both should I hang on? I have a big trip planned next month and this would seem the ideal time to buy so i have time to learn the camera.

i am in the very same boat :)

About a year ago I was looking to upgrade a 400D and ended up having to choose between the 7D and 60D. In the end I went for the 7D as it has a magnesium body and weather sealing. A year on and I'm happy with my choice.

I might be wrong, but I wouldn't think that the 60d is due to be replaced any time soon - hasn't it only been out 12 months?

Anyway, I had a 60d - bought it because it felt better than the nikon in the same price bracket. However I upgraded to the 7d not long after - was probably an unnecessary replacement, but I decided for nature and fast jet photography the 7d would suit me better.

They're both excellent camera's but you need to ask yourself if you need/want the features of the 7d. That's what basically happened to me - I ended up feeling like I'd settled for second best so I upgraded. Like I said it was probably unnecessary - but I'm happy!!

I've jumped from the 400D to the 7D, I don't have any doubts about it! I thought about the 60D, but the deciding factor was the AF system on the 7D - it's newer, has 19 points and the tracking is sublime. For my sports stuff, it was a no-brainer. The 60D has a perfectly good AF system, but it's not a touch on the 7D

I've done some motorsport stuff and birds in flight the 450D was ok but I had to shoot jpg all the time just to keep up and focus could be a bit slow. I have some nice glass (bought that first) so the most important things for me are Better Low light performance, Faster Raw shooting, improved focus performance (I also like the way you choose focal points on the 7D) it just ticks all the boxes.
I suppose if you look at the time lines for some of the other bodies the time scale does seem to be every 2 years.....

I was also looking at the hidden costs, CF cards, spare batteries etc Spending money is so hard :D

I have just made the jump from 500d to 60d. £675 from HDEW, seems to be the best price for a UK warranty camera.

That's a very good price about £100 less than amazon who are they? best price on camera price buster. I think the AF kills it for me though. They have the 7D at £1050.

If they bought out the new 7D in Feb/March i don't think i'd be to annoyed! I;ve been looking on http://www.canonrumors.com completely funny if you go back through the site they've been predicted new bodies every month since the site was setup we should be on 5D mkXIV by now :D

Hi Paul

A good friend has just been through this and has decided on and just picked up a 60D. He has spent a good couple of months deciding about this and eventually felt the 60D was a better bet for him, obviously cost also played a part for him, but feature wise, handling, what he wanted over his 450D the 60D was a better bet for him.

That is a good price Alan, as cheapest is £757 from Amazon, £799 from Jessops / Jacobs etc, but it's worth pointing out this isn't a Canon UK warrenty, it's a HDEW warrenty - they organise repairs etc.

Get the best you can afford, that way you won't look back and regret buying it.

I have a 5d2 that took me a while to afford, I love the camera and the output I get from it quality wise. I also ended up with a 1d3 thats superb for fast action stuff.

Both where the best I could afford and I don't regret either purchase.

Hi Andy, Yes, after looking at reviews of HDEW you are right, but the reviews are all good, and it appears they honour their warranty - and they are in the UK rather than some of the other importers. I hope I wont have a problem, but it's good to know there is someone to call if there is:)

I went from 450D to 60D in October last year and I have not regretted it at all however due to work commitments my photography has taken a bit of a back seat recently.

I would be tempted to hold off, maybe buy a new lens to keep you going till October to see what replacements are coming. I was so tempted to swap my 1d mkIII for the mk4 but I'm now thinking its best to just wait it out.

Wise words and this is the issue. i'm fighting the urge to push the Buy button

Whenever you upgrade to anything new there is always a model that comes out within a few months that you wish you'd bought instead! It's how it is. Other alternative is to wait and see what comes out and pick up a 7d cheaper second hand or end of line as everyone off loads them for the latest, greatest thing :)

The 60D is new, the 7D has been about a while, I have the 60D through choice, it has the same sensor, and I can live with 2fps slower shooting, whereas the hinged screen on the 60D is invaluable for nature shots, when in a hide.

Eh? What rumours?

The 7D won't be replaced until late 2012 at the earliest I don't think, and the 60D replacement will be even further away.

Yeah, I'd say a 5dii successor and 1dsiii will be next in line before anything 7d related. not sure about the 60D but i'd say it's got another year left in or so too.

There're plenty of people buying 5dii's just now despite it being well due an upgrade. I personally wouldn't let it put me off. How long are you going to wait if nothing's announced in October? You could be waiting forever!!!

Just a follow up on this. Received my 60d from HDEW cameras today. Good service throughout, comes with a 3 year warranty (service contract) also. Looking forward to getting out with it tomorrow.:D:D

If it helps at all I had a 7D, sold it and got the 60D and haven't looked back.

I do miss the extra AF control and having movie on a quick switch, but thats about it - the 60D worked much better for me and not having MA has been a boon as my lenses now "just work" whereas before I found myself tinkering to try and get sharper and it was just not worth the hassle.
