Toph101, as a Nikon man (but a previous EOS user for 10 years) I have to say I was impressed with the 7D I got to shoot with yesterday. Better build quality than the older 10/20/30/40D (slightly larger body too) and IMO, it feels better in the hand than a 5DMK2 - maybe that's phycological though because it's newer.
The AF is super-super-quick, which was something I know was going to be a key selling point and although it doesn't have the mechanical 'clunk' that a Nikon does, the shutter goes like a fiddler's elbow when you clock up the FPS - very impressed byt the whole 'sureness' of the mechanics inside, if you get my drift.
Menus seems to have been improved over older models and the buttons on the top plate and on the rear (alongside that massive screen which collects nose grease) are much more chunky and tactile and user-friendly. I found the main command dial on the rear not so good as older models because it sits more flush with the body. The smaller toggle command joystick, although not my cup of tea since it was introduced, does the job.
AF selection is better than the 5D and there are more points, which makes focussing easier. Still, there needs to be more than just a diamond shape of points in the middle - anything off towards the edges/corners means locking the AF then recomposing... not ideal.
Didn't try the video function.
Colour rendition and sharpness of JPEGs straight from the camera is very good and I was amazed that in tricky lighting (shooting into the sun with the subject in shade) it exposed it perfectly every time. My mate who bought it on Saturday can't believe how much of a world apart it is compared to his old EOS D60!!!!
Although there's nothing Canon does (apart from the d! series) that would drag me away from my D2X, if I were starting out afresh this would be a serious contender to something like a D300s or even a D700, albeit not with FF field of view.
