Hi,

I currently have a 5D Mkiii which I use for the majority of my shots, however as I work at an airport I would like to get some shots of some of the more interesting visitors. I am thinking of buying a 7D Mkii for this and just leaving it at work with my 100-400L Mkii fitted. As I cycle to work most days I don't really want to mess about carrying the 5D body back and forth, so am just wondering if the 7D Mkii sounds like the right body for this, or would a 7D be suitable.

The aircraft are a mixture of helicopters (Chinook, Apache, Merlin etc) fast jets,(Hawks from the Red's as well as the odd Tonka and Typhoon) as well as C17's and A400's.

Thanks :)

Depends if the lens will fill the frame on the 5D3 body, if it will then I would stick with that. The 7D2 has slightly more cross type points available to AF with but tbh the centre point is probably all you are going to need with aircraft. I found the 5D3 more than adequate at airshows with a 100/400 mk 1 and is slightly better noise wise (when the image is pixel peeped) than the 7D2 (I borrowed my sons one). There's very little difference between a 7D2 and a 5D3 imo so if funds are available and you dont want the faff of carrying the 5 on a daily basis the 7D2 will fit the bill nicely, I personally wouldnt consider a 7D mk 1 as they have a very variable reputation from what I have read, no actual experience of using one though. Something worth considering is with the imminent arrival of a 7D3 early next year if rumours are to be believed is maybe hold off and get a mk2 "cheap".

Well I’ve done the man maths and decided to go for the 7D Mkii plus grip. I’m sure that I’ll get plenty of use out of it after reading some reviews. I think it’ll complement the 5D3 also.

I went from a 7Dmk1 to a 7Dmk2 + 6D, best of both worlds :)

The main change from the 7dmk1 -> mk2 for me was lower noise at higher ISO and a slightly higher keep rate for wildlife .

That is my thoughts, the 7D2 plus 5D3 should give me all I'll need. :)

Go for it. As mentioned by others the 7d2 will compliment perfectly with the full frame of the 5d3.
Happy togging
