My 7d is capable of doing 10fps...... But its doing 3-4 and stopping? Any ideas what im doing wrong
 
Max should be 8? Are you sure your not on the 3fps drive instead of hi? Have you tried a different compact flash card?
 
Have you got the continuous shooting mode set on Lo rather than Hi and yes max 8 fps
 
What CF card (brand and speed rating) are you using ?
The camera's only as fast as the card it's writing to. :)
 
Its definatly on high mode and its a lexar 800x 120mb......... Im stumped :-s
 
Maybe silly question - have you let the camera format the CF card ?
Shouldn't matter, but worth trying ?

"Note: If your camera is a 1D Mark IV, 7D, 5D Mark II or 50D, update its firmware to the latest available to avoid a slow write speed quirk with these models and UDMA 7 cards, including Lexar's 1000X series."
 
In low light the fps drop because of the metering. Are you using AV / TV or manual. You could use AE lock while in AV or TV to get around this, but it's a function of the camera in low light.


8 Frames Per Second
The camera is capable of 8 frames per second bursts. I do want to note that there are situations you won’t get the full 8fps. The following is from the manual of the 7D (page 93 USA/Canada).

- When the battery level is low, the continuous shooting speed will be slightly slower.
- In the AI Servo AF mode, the continuous shooting speed may become slightly slower depending on the subject and lens used.
- In low-light areas or indoors, the continuous shooting speed may become slower even if a fast shutter speed is set.

From Canon Tech Support in regards to the slowing of frame rate
The slowdown of the frame rate is because of Canon’s new metering system. Frame rate is sacrificed in favor of metering accuracy.

Workaround?
If you use exposure lock, the camera will ignore the above and shoot at the desired 8fps.

I found that if you were shooting in low light and had noise reduction set to high then it would have an effect on the fps. It used to shoot 4 or 5 frames then stop and then start again.
 
This might be my issue then i am testing it in near darkness................. I will try it today after rugby and see what happens
 
It should do 8fs but a good test is to set it to record in jpeg that way it should not buffer up, i would expect around 4/5fs if shooting raw at full res

Turn the noise thing off and its like a rocket! Problemo solved. :-) thanks guys

Nope. Card speed has zero effect on the frame rate until the buffer fills (about 3 seconds shooting raw, forever for jpeg).
