Hi all. I've started reading reviews etc. on the 7D with a view to changing from my 50D. Ken Rockwell seems to think that the 9 point system on the 50D is better than the more complex system of the 7D. Of course one has to read a lot more than one review in order to form an opinion, so what do 7D users here think of the focus points? (I'm assuming that 7D users have come from a 40/50D) Thanks in advance for any help.:)

I came from the 400D so not that same but I did loan a 50D for afew shoots to test and the 7D 19 point does give you much more flexability. The zoning function is great too.

I moved from a 50D to a 7D and have found the focus system to be much better. Took a while to get used to if I'm honest and I went through a real love / hate relationship with the 7D. I used to think I'd made a mistake by ditching the 50D in favour of the 7D - Now, I'd not go back and I am very happy I made the move. As said, the increased number of points does help with composition. All round I would say it's a very good upgrade and the focus system is great, in my case, I had to put the leg work in to get results.

I moved from the 40D and find the 7D focusing much better, but as previously mentioned it takes time to get use too and messed up/missed shots as I fumbled my way through the points. Buts worth the upgrade from the 40D certainly.

Agreed, I was so confused by the different AF modes on the 7D in the beginning.. Always had the wrong mode on, coming from a 400D and 40D. But when I got used to it, it's been great.

Btw, the just released 60D also has the "good old" 9-point AF.. Sorry to say but Nikon's mid range offering trumps it easily... :( Earth calling Canon.. update it already!

The 7D focus points are very useable, and accurate. Some of the options are turned off in default straight out of the box. Just take some time out to read the manual and maybe even look at some tutorials about it. Once you get the hang of it, it's fast and easy to adapt it to your shooting style.

I was so impressed with the 7d autofocus system i bought a second 7d you don't do that unless you are 100% happy
Regards
Richard

Ah! I was always pretty sure that the 7D's AF system was a lot better than the 50D's. It's good to see that opinion confirmed - because if KR says the 7D is worse then you could bet your house on it being better.

Ken likes to buy all the gear we can only dream of owning then shoots it on P mode hehe :D
