I have taken the plunge and upgraded from the 40D to 7D. Arrived yesterday but only had time to charge the battery, set the date and check the firmware is up to date!! More time to play at the weekend!!

A big  to Stuart at Digital Depot-excellent price for a genuine UK camera, spare battery and Sandisk Ultra CF card with very good, prompt friendly service:)

Just out of interest how do you check the firmware is up to date?

The current firmware is 1.1.0 It is in one of the menus-sorry not near a camera and cannot remember which. This is the link to Canon's firmware website to check for the latest and get the downloads http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd-e.html

Whilst in the camera's Menu, spin the main dial until the Set-up 3 (spanner with 3 dots) icon is highlighted. at the bottom of the list on that page it'll say Firmware Ver. x.x.x, which'll be the latest on your camera.

Yeah Paul the latest version is 1.1.0; a colleague of mine just downloaded it. It was released at the beginning of November

Enjoy your new toy.. I mean pro tool! :D

To check how many dead pixels your new 7D has, set the camera to manual exposure, bump ISO up to 3200, set 5 seconds manual exposure, and take a photo with just the body and lens cover on. Dead, stuck or defective pixels tend to show as red or white.

Apparently most modern sensors have dozens of dodgy pixels which are "mapped out" at the factory. My first 7D had 6 or 7 which missed the mapping process, but it's replacement is fine. Setting "Long Exposure Noise Reduction" to on will remove them anyway, without affecting IQ. I just wanted pixel perfection.

What a pointless exercise

Orville, I take it you're talking sensor pixels (as opposed to LCD screen pixels)? If that's the case, I'm quite amazed Canon would replace your camera body for the sake of 6 or 7 (or do you mean 6 or 7 dozen?) dead pixels out of 18 million of them; I'd expect so few dead pixels would be well with in Canon's quality tolerances.

Uh oh... dem Kingfishers gotta watch out now then. :D

Congrats Paul - but keep it under your hat - far too many people buying this camera - think about the competition! ;)

The 6 or 7 pixels showed up very clearly during video footage. Most of them were towards the centre of the picture, and although they were single pixels, each bled into surrounding pixels making them each appear 3 or 4 pixels wide.

I purchased my original 7D from BH Photo whilst in New York. Fortunately I spotted the issue straight away, and they were very happy to exchange it for another 7D. The person behind the counter said they have several cameras returned each week due to pixel issues.

The 7D is a great camera, and I am not trying to put a downer on anyone's new purchase. I am just trying to highlight a potential issue which if not spotted early, may be difficult to rectify/replace later. If my pixels were unnoticeable, I would not have bothered replacing it. Unfortunately they were really really noticeable during long exposures and video.

I am now much happier knowing that every video/picture I take does not have bright red/white dots. Photos would have been relatively easy to fix, but video not so. Perhaps I just got a bad one that has made me overly cautious. Just trying to help...

Here is an example taken from someone else's 7D. These are pretty similar to what I was seeing.

Thanks CT I have been watching your ongoing reviews with great interest!!

Congrats. You've done more than me then. Mine arrived as week ago and all I've had time to do is charge the battery and hide the thing from my wife ;)

She's back at work tomorrow and I've got the day off so hopefully I'll actually get to play. The upgrade from my 20D better be worth it!

That is classic I have just about recovered from laughing!!

I am sure you will find it an improvement on the 20D, I am certainly hoping for an improvement on my 40D-mind you we had better be aware of these red pixels when we take pictures with our lens caps on:)

40D to 7D is a good solid upgrade. The 7D makes improvements in every area and has some nice additional features such as Micro Focus Adjustment and remote flash control. Perhaps I overplayed the red pixel thing a bit. They horrified me because they were so obvious in general shooting on my first 7D, but I probably just got a rare dud. The replacement is excellent and has been a nice step up from my old 40D, which was an excellent camera as well.

It's ok, the default seems to be that the camera is set to take shots without a CF card. So, we'll never see the red pixels recorded anyway. In many ways, not having a card installed might be the best way to improve my shots ;)

Wow I didn't know it had that feature, I needn't have bought that USB drive to store the images then :D

Getting mine in the next few days ...looking forward to seeing the red pixels

and me! Mine's arriving tomorrow! Very excited.

"Make sure you give the battery a full charge 1st time"......yeah right. I'll try.

This morning my colleague put his 7D to the lens-cap-on, dead-pixel test, and his results were quite conclusive; have a look here.

Congrats on the new purchase...

I am really enjoying mine..

I also upgraded from 40D to 7D, needed the low light performance for indoor equine events. Mind you, the feature that I love the most is remote flash firing! I'm now much more creative with lighting. Impatient for Apple to update Aperture to recognise the RAW files though.
Handy to capture the Grandkids on pukka video !! without having to change cameras.

I'm trying to resist the 7D, you lot aren't helping!

I was convnced that the level indicator was just a useless gimmick. Not the case now, night shooting last night and it was invaluable on the tripod. I'd forgotten my glasses so couldn't see the levelling bubble on it. Another reason to congratulate myself for buying it.

Used the 7D for the first time in today so thought I would post a couple of pics. I am very impressed so far, but I have a lot to learn!!

Not bad for first shots, I presume Tangmere had a problem and the run was only to Chichester and not Portsmouth Harbour as well! :annoyed: At least he had the throttle open for you. :D

Yes I was quite pleased-its a fabulous engine-The originals seem sharper than these downsized ones!!

Missed the DHL delivery on Friday... have to wait till Monday for mine -- 2 days does not matter does it!!!

Bittern usually hangs around on the Mid Hants Railway so I can shoot it there sometime. I expect they are running Christmas specials, not the same as full throttle on a mainline though. So any other interesting shots?
