7D and Sigma 150-500 problem

Hi all,
I recently upgraded to a 7D from a 40D and just put my sigma 150-500mm on it for the first time. I'm having issues with the auto-focus.
When I press the shutter button down it will not focus on subject if it is well out of focus- I have to tweak it so the subject is almost in focus with the manual focus override-then autofocus kicks in.
Never had this on the 40d. I hope I've explained this properly!
Is it the camera or lens or some setting? Other lenses seem ok on the 7d. The Sigma lens is quite old.

Very good, I've done something similar in past and couldn't for the life of me remember adjusting the setting

Steve, I was interested in your comment here. I too have a problem with a long tele lens searching for focus. can you explain exactly what you did to rectify the problem?

Yes- I went to custom setting menu and enabled the setting "focus search on" this seemed to sort the issue!
