I recently upgraded to a 7D and I'm still learning with it but at home with it, also I use PSE8 no other PP. I've been using the DPP canon S/W for RAW conversions as every review I've seen states it has the best NR and Raw converter for the newer 7D files.


For the second time I'm being offered Light room 3 at a discount, which happens to be a pretty good deal. less than B&H usa price anyway (for a download) Just wondering what people think about my situation? I've considered LR3 for it's batch processing and organization but worried it all becomes more complex with a third application. Will I gain anything with LR3, will I obsolete PSE8?? Your thoughts are appreciated.
 
Once you've got into LR3, you won't look back on other software! I use LR2, having used PS CS3 all the time before that. Now I only ever open CS3 if I want to do some wacky editing or graphic design.

LR3 will give you much, much finer control over the pictures. The best thing is that the editing is non-destructive - you can go back into the program days/weeks/months later and any adjustments you made to the photos can be undone or adjusted any way you please. A good example of this is the crop/rotate function. It doesn't bin the areas you don't want, it saves them in case you decide that actually you wanted a wider crop, or something.

:plusone: Lightroom is fantastic. It will make you use PS less, but is doing that it will save you a lot of time, and keep all your images organised. It integrates seamlessly with PS, so don't worry about it making things more complicated.
 
Lightroom is pretty darn good, but it's not photoshop, it can't do a lot of the things people take for granted in photoshop, think of lightroom as the camera raw part of photoshop with the catalogue and a few bells and whistles, rather than comparing the two.
Really lightroom compliments photoshop rather than replaces it.

Camera raw and Lightoom are the same raw engine (essentially) but photoshop offers a lot more options after you come out of camera raw into photoshop proper.

So Light room is primarily a RAW edit tool? there is a lot of talk on the net about the DPP for 7D being the best performance (users, not canon) RAW converter are you a 7D shooter?
 
I've got 7Ds and I can't really see a difference between DPP and LR, although I haven't looked that hard. I do know LR is a lot more convenient though! It is the same as Camera Raw in terms of processing, but it has so many tools now the number of pictures that need to go to photoshop is pretty small (depending on what you're shooting, obviously)
 
I've got a 7D and I think that the sharpening and noise-reduction tools in LR3 are way better than DPP. I also find LR a lot easier to use.
 
I too have 7D and even though I started with DPP I like LR3 very much.

So now for me it's LR3 and occasionally some PSP if I need to do anything further, i.e. layers etc.

LR3 covers most of what I want to do, more than DPP does.
